Pamela and Carl

How We Met

Carl and I met in August 2011 at the University of Central Florida in our undergraduate Lower Extremity Function class. More specifically, in the hallway outside the classroom. As soon as I saw Carl, I’m pretty sure my heart skipped 80 beats. I worked up enough courage to ask everyone waiting if they had ever had the professor before. Carl was the first to speak up and said he had. As it was a partner class (& Carl knew that), he immediately sat down next to me to be his partner for the semester. We had instant chemistry. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Carl is literally the most handsome person on the planet, and he also has the kindest, wonderful, and thoughtful heart. However, I partnered with my friend Sammy and Carl ended up partnering with our now friend Gilad. As Carl and I were both dating other people at the time, we parted ways at the end of the semester, after bumping elbows and knees on accident for 5 months. We sporadically talked through Facebook comments on birthdays for the next year and a half. In April 2013, I received the following Facebook message, completely out of the blue. “Ms. Pam dow. how are you? I always see your witty posts on FB.” & we’ve been together ever since. Carl has always been my soulmate and I always knew I would marry him. He is the best part of me and I could never imagine my life without him.

How He Asked

Carl proposed at the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse on May 5, 2018. 5 is Carl’s favorite number, as well as the former jersey number of his favorite baseball player Nomar Garciaparra, a fact we bonded over because Nomar and I share the same birthday. Also, our 5th anniversary is on May 9, so he may sure to hit that part hard. Carl asked me to take a quick day trip to one of our favorite places, and I, of course, was on board. First stop of the day was Starbucks at 8 AM. With our coffee, I picked up some cake pops to eat on the road. Carl immediately ate his, which should have been a dead giveaway that Carl had a nervous stomach. I had a feeling it was the day Carl was going to propose, but I didn’t want to spoil any of his surprises. Carl nervously fidgeted in the passenger seat as it began to rain and the first stop in St. Augustine was going to the lighthouse. We stopped to use the bathroom and change drivers, and Carl wouldn’t let me have my purse! He even took it into the bathroom with him. Hint #2.

As we climbed to the top of the lighthouse, there were quite a few people. I was getting nervous that maybe I had been wrong and this wasn’t finally the day he was going to propose. After the massive crowd departed, Carl asked if I wanted to take a picture, and asked the woman next to us if she would take it. He apparently mouthed to her that he was going to propose, and a huge shout out to this random woman who woke up thinking she was just climbing a lighthouse and was then tasked with capturing this moment. She did an AMAZING job if I do say so myself.

Carl said the most wonderful things to me. He said it has been the best five years of his life and that he couldn’t want to spend the rest of his life with me… & our dog Gobi. It was truly the most special and magical place and words he could have chosen. We love lighthouses, and I always figured Carl would find a way to work one in… And he did. I also included a photo of the first time we climbed a lighthouse together in August 2013 in Key West. This time, we finally bought the lighthouse passport book that we have always wanted and stamped it. I am so grateful to Carl and I am so lucky to be his future bride.
