Olivia and Daniel
How We Met
Daniel and I met right before my spring semester of my sophomore year. He was an older guy, entering his second year of Pharmacy school. I was running around without a care in the world, just taking life one day at a time. One night right before school started back, Daniel and I had both gone out to celebrate our two of our best friend’s birthdays when we were casually introduced by mutual friends. We exchanged numbers and me, being my “lala” self, didn’t think anything about it. Later that evening I got a call from the same random guy that I had met earlier that night (Daniel). He told me how wonderful it was meeting me and how he would love to take me out on a date some time soon so we could get to know each other.
After we met, a week or so passes and the spring semester had begun. I still talked to Daniel every now and then, but I was unsure about actually going on a date with him. I had only met him that one time, but let me tell you, Daniel is a persistent man. He texted me several times (even a double text *gasp) and was determined to see me. One day he texted me about going to dinner with him later in the week. I was nervous so I didn’t reply right away as I was talking to my roommates about if I should go or not. The next thing I know my phone was ringing, it was Daniel. I didn’t know what to do so I answered. He was one the phone and said “I knew you were probably going to say no to dinner with me if I we only talked over text, so I decided to call you and put you on the spot”. He told me when he would pick me up and then he pretty much hung up on me before I could really answer. I remember asking him “You really want to go on this date don’t you” and he responded “When I see something I want, I go after it”. Three days later he was picking me up for our first date.
When he picked me up that night, we hadn’t even made it to the restaurant before he had me. I remember sitting at a red light, not even five minutes into the date, thinking this could be it. He started the date off talking about what he wanted his life to look like, and it was parallel to mine. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I had prayed for a man like this but honestly wasn’t sure if he existed, and now, I was sitting in the passenger seat of his truck.
How He Asked
Almost two and a half years after we met, we headed back to my hometown of Rome GA to visit my family. The weekend had gone by just as all the other ones when I am at home, just visiting and catching up with my family. My best friend even came to see me and I was enjoying spending time with everyone! I had been suspicious earlier in the weekend but then Shelby (best friend) proceeded to ask me what my dream proposal was. I assumed there was no way it was happening any time soon or she wouldn’t be asking me such things.
The day: I got up and went about my morning as usual. Shelby said she really wanted to go shopping and though I was wanting to stay at home and relax, Shelby never asks to do anything so I went along. We went onto Broad Street and walked around for about two hours, and in the middle of it, Daniel called me and told me that he was helping my stepfather on the farm for a bit. When we were done, we headed back to my dad’s house and were planning on swimming when we got there. We get out of the car and walk to my room to get ready.
Then, Shelby, who was walking ahead of me, opens up my bedroom door and I am speechless. There are rose pedals all over the bed, a beautiful dress, champagne and the 51st letter.
For those that don’t know, Daniel and I had to be long distance for a year when he had to move to Jackson to complete his third year of pharmacy school. He knew how bad I had been dreading it, so he came up with a present to help make the long distance not so bad. One day, right before the school year started, Daniel gave me a box of letters titled “When You Need to Know How Much I Love You”. It was filled with 50 letters that I could open up when I was missing him. Each letter contained dreams, memories, things he loved about our relationship, and “date” cards with fun things to do when we were together.
Back to the room and the 51st letter. The letter tells me to get ready for our “date”, to take my time, to enjoy getting ready with my best friends and that he would see me soon. I knew then that it was the day he would ask me to marry him.
I turn around from reading the letter and standing next to Shelby another childhood best friend named Allie. He had brought my best friends into town to be a part of our special day. And so as the card said, we started getting ready.
An hour or so passed and the girls told me that my ride was here. I walk outside and see a limo waiting for me. The girls blindfolded me, helped me inside, and then sent me on my way. I was in the car for about two minutes before I knew where I was going…. The Farm. The place I grew up, my home, I knew that drive like the back of my hand. I didn’t need to see to know that was exactly where he was taking me. I said a prayer and before I knew it, the limo stopped. I get out, still blindfold (I proceeded to bump into the door haha) and look up.
Daniel is standing at the end of the dock looking as handsome as ever, surrounded by flowers. The dock over the past few years had been worn and tethered. However, it wasn’t on this day. It looked better than it ever had. Like an absolute dream, I could not believe how perfect it was. After a moment of letting everything sink in, I walk over to Daniel, tears in my eyes, and he leads me to the gazebo. He drops to his knee and says “Olivia, I know how much this place means to you, it is your safe place, your home. I could not think of a better place to start our lives together, because I want you to always feel safe and at home when you are with me, forever” and then he asked me “Will you marry me?”.
I was speechless, I was trying to absorb everything about this. So of course I replied “Yes, yes, of course”.
I felt as if I was overflowing with joy. I could not have imagined anything this spectacular in my wildest dreams. My face was hurting from smiling so much and the surprises did not stop there. Daniel and I walk off the dock and he has both of our families with us to celebrate. They open the garage and inside are all of my loved ones. Being able to celebrate with them was just the icing to the perfect proposal cake. We ate and laughed and cried (happy tears) and had a wonderful evening together, and I am now engaged to the love of my life.
I thank God every day for this amazing mans persistence!
What Daniel created (with the help of some awesome friends and family) was incredible. His proposal was everything and more than I could have ever imagined. He continues to amaze me with his love with each passing day. I also have to take a moment to thank everyone that helped pitch in. Eugene, for the beautiful landscaping. My mother, stepmother and our friends and siblings for the decorations. My dad for making me come home that weekend. Elizabeth for capturing all of these moments exquisitely, and ending that day as a friend, not just a photographer. Thank you all. Thank you for helping make all my dreams come true.
My favorite part of my ring is a small envelope engraved on the inside of the band to always remind me of how much Daniel loves me (referring back to the 51 letters). It is such a sentimental touch and I am absolutely in love with it!
