Odamea and Adeleke

How We Met

Leke and I met 6 years ago, but two years late. My best friend suggested I meet Leke the summer before our senior year of college. I declined as I wanted to have more focus on finishing my degree. Little would I know, 2 years later, he would by chance join his best friend in meeting me and my best friend for drinks. I was immediately drawn to his smile and his bright and positive attitude. I wanted to talk to him all night, and the next day, and the day after that. After throwing some not so subtle hints via social media, I convinced him to go out bowling about a month later. While eating, he leaned over and kissed me on the cheek, and I was more than happy when he kissed me for the first time on the lips. I haven’t wanted to kiss anyone else since. We have faced a lot of obstacles; Leke is Nigerian and I am Ghanaian. We got a lot of questions on if we were really planning on staying together, since our cultures do not “get along.” The truth is, I would risk it all to be with him, so I never cared what other people had to say. I love him and there is nothing more pure than that.

How He Asked

Leke proposed to me the evening I graduated from my Masters program. He and a good friend of ours were pressuring me to have a graduation party and asked who I wanted to be there. Honestly, I just wanted to go home and sleep off finishing Grad school :). But that evening when we arrived, his family was there, my parents were there, and many of our close friends. i remember Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors” playing and thinking, Leke really is my mirror: I am looking at the other half of me. A group of our friends who make up the Afro-pop group A’wonBoyz got up to give me a gift of a special song for my special day. Imagine my surprise when my Leke came out singing instead a remix of their song “I want to be with you tonight and everyday, you are the love of my whole life, in everyway. One by one, it’s me and you, take my hand just say I do. Girl, what are you waiting for?” People always say you will cry when this happens, but I was too happy to cry. I couldn’t stop smiling. This man has loved me with all of my flaws, and has been with me through so many challenges and achievements. I can’t wait to spend my life with the man who holds my heart.
