Nykeya and Benjamin
How He Asked: Because I am a Certified Public Accountant, January through April 15th is a really stressful period for me. Ben offered to take me out on a date to destress after the tax deadline. We agreed to go to Reston, Virginia, our old stomping grounds during our George Mason University Days. We arrived in Reston, had lunch, and spent some time walking around the town center. Then, he mentioned this little island in the heart of DC that his co-workers had told him about and asked if I would like to go. I agreed and we headed there.
The whole day, I wondered if this would be the day. But at this point I had talked myself out of it because this part of the trip was not planned and his pants were tight enough that I would be able to notice a ring box.
Once on the island, we walked around the park and he kept saying, “there sure are a lot of people here.” We sat talking on a bench for a while and then he started acting weird. I could see his heart beating through his neck and he just kept looking around. And I was so oblivious, I had no idea what was going on, I just questioned his well-being.
He pulled me off the bench and gave me a hug and asked if I knew how much he loved me and if I knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. I just thought to myself…Yes, you keep telling me this! At this point, he was getting down on one knee, and I could not believe it. He pulled a necklace (that he had mysteriously found a couple months back) out of his collared shirt and on the necklace was a beautiful diamond ring.
He asked me to marry him and all I could say was “Oh my God, Get Up!!” because I knew how much he didn’t like crowds. But he wouldn’t get up until I said Yes!! So I said it and when he got up, people were clapping.
When I finally came back to reality, there was a photographer there to capture the whole moment. Hence, the reason why he was looking around. He wanted to make sure he was there. After taking a few more pictures with the photographer, we headed back to the car while everyone told us congrats and wives mention how they wished their husband had done something like that.
He had made reservations to one of my favorite restaurants, but I was such in shock that I could not eat. So we skipped dinner and went home to spread the good news to our families.
I was later informed that the time I thought he was hanging out with one of his friends was actually when they went to scope out the place and one Saturday while I was working, he and his dad went to get the ring. He also had my sister take me to get my nails done the day before. I was on such a high after this moment. It was the best feeling in the world.
