Nina and Rino
How We Met
Rino and I have been dating for 7 years and have just bought our first home together. As children we had grown up together, as our families were very close. As a little girl, I had the biggest school girl crush on him and everyone knew it (even him).
As we grew up, I realized by little dream would be better put on the back burner. We grew to become great friends and had other relationships, until one morning I suddenly woke up realizing I was lying to myself. I knew I wanted to marry this man, but was not sure if he felt the same way.
Until one evening, I got the text message that I was waiting for over 10 years, “Hey, listen I know this is random, but I think I really like you and want to see where this goes”. I experienced a slew of emotions, but it was definitely one of the happiest moments for me.
We started dating at a young age, but learned a lot about ourselves and each other. We were both able to build successful careers and support one another through many hardships, but also enjoy monumental moments in our lives.
We never really spoke about marriage, up until recently, as many of our friends were starting to take this next step. I knew it would happen one day, but I didn’t want to add any pressure as we had just purchased our home.
How He Asked
We have a family tradition to go Apple Picking ever year with both of our families. This year being extra special, as we have a new addition to our family, Selena, our little niece! So we had a plan to go for Saturday, October 8 as a family, although after having this planned for a few weeks and getting closer to the date.
I realized it was going to rain. A couple days prior, I had messaged everyone confirming that they wanted to attending, even if it was forecasting to rain.
Everyone responded as to how eager they were to attend, personally I didn’t understand why everyone wanted to go apple picking in the pouring rain. The only reason I could see to attend, was that my sister-in-law, Maria, was set to give birth the next week-end and it would be the only day possible to ensure we maintain the tradition and get some cute pictures of Selena on her first Apple Picking experience.
The morning of we woke up early to find it raining, as expected! We went through our usual Saturday morning routine of going to the gym (he’s a trainer & CrossFit box owner, we both share a passion for fitness).
Afterwards, we both rushed to get ready for our Apple Picking adventure in the rain.
On the car ride to the orchard, I was getting excited to be able to get some cute family pictures and thinking of recipes to make with the apples. After paying for our admission, we headed towards the trees, only to realize that I had left the basket back at the car.
I ran back to get the basket, although by the time I had returned, Rino was alone as the others had moved ahead. Rino seemed very eager to get the biggest apples on the tallest trees, taking his time to find the perfect ones.
I was enjoying myself, but becoming anxious and trying to find the others. Finally, after calling everyone’s name, Rino’s Mother, Joanne, called for us to head in her direction. When I headed into the next row of trees, I could not believe what I saw.
Everything was set up like a Pinterest pictures, from the apples reading “WILL YOU MARRY ME?”,the hand-written signs and our photos being strung form tree to tree.
I was left speechless and tears of joy streaming down my face.
I immediately threw down my umbrella, as he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
We were crying and shaking and both completely thrilled that this moment had finally come for us.
He really thought everything through form having our immediate family present to getting a photographer to capture the moment.
I could have not planned it better myself.
