Nida and Amir

how he asked

Being a Muslim and in a long-distance relationship, our engagement happened a little differently. In our religion, both parents must agree upon it and there has to be an Islamic ceremony which binds both partners together with a promise of marriage. Our engagement ceremony occurred a nice October weekend with both of our parents’ blessings, of course. His family flew out from Florida to Virginia to be there for us on our celebration. It was definitely an amazing and memorable weekend for my fiance and I. Since our engagement played out a little differently, he never had the opportunity to get down on one knee. My fiance has always known that I wanted the “all-American proposal” that every girl dreams of. So, he planned out this beautiful surprise. The week I graduated from nursing school, he came to Virginia to visit me and celebrate my huge success. We took a random trip to Washington, D.C. with my sister to sight-see and take pictures. We had an amazing time and he took my sister and I to a beautiful restaurant and afterwards we went to the WWII Memorial to take pictures. As my sister took a picture of us standing together, I jokingly said “this would be the perfect spot to purpose!” and, to my surprise, he got down on one knee and proposed, as my sister clicked away with the camera. It was such an amazing memory and I will never forget it.
