Nicole and Andrew
How We Met
Andrew and I first met when we were six years old. He is my cousin’s best friend and throughout grade school I would always see him here and there and think he was the cutest guy I’d ever seen. When we were both 12 I dressed up as a gothic prom queen for Halloween (don’t ask) not knowing Andrew was going to be trick-or-treating with us. When I found out he was going to be there I was SO embarrassed of my costume choice (naturally) that I hid for a good 30 minutes until my mom had to drag me out of the closet. Andrew used to tease me and chase me and call me alien in middle school. I was so embarrassed, but I remember my mom telling me “Watch Nicole, I bet you’ll date him in high school”. Of course I didn’t believe her at the time. However, freshman year of high school came around and within the first month he was asking me for my cell phone number on MySpace. We talked nonstop on the phone and texting for a week. Our first “date” (we were 14) was to Knotts Scary Farm. We went on one ride together and after that I was not having the “getting scared” part of the theme park so I ditched him and went to find my dad.
He understood, but he still teases me about it. Andrew and I were inseparable in high school. We went to every dance together and became best friends and soulmates. Everyone knew us as the couple that’s never going to break up. Senior year of high school came around and it was time to start deciding where to go for college. Andrew is one of the smartest people I know, I knew that he would want to go to a good college away from home and I didn’t want to hold him back. Andrew chose Virginia Military Institute to study History and upon graduation become an officer in the United States Navy. I could not have been more proud of his choice and I knew no matter what I was going to be there to support and help him get through VMI. I have gone out there a few times to be with him and have enjoyed every moment of getting to see what he does at VMI. However, we both live for the moments when he comes home and we are able to go to Disneyland. Andrew is in his last year at VMI and in 4 short months he will graduate and be an officer in the U.S. Navy. He just recently left home to finish his final semester. However, while he was here he popped the question, it was the most magical night of my life.
How He Asked
He took me to Disneyland for a date, nothing out of the ordinary because we both have annual passes. We were enjoying the evening and just talking and laughing. One of the attractions that has always been meaningful to us, the Mark Twain riverboat, was docked and it was so pretty outside. He took me up on the third level of the boat to just talk and look out at Disneyland and be in the moment. I had no idea what he was planning. We were looking out at the water and watching all the people hustle and bustle to get on rides, I was so oblivious. He took my hands and looked me in the eye and said, “I love you so much, I have to ask you a question.” Before I could say anything, he was down on one knee asking, “Will you marry me?”
I didn’t know what to say, at first I just wanted a hug and a kiss. I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy. He looked at me and said “So, is that a yes?” Of course it was! After 7 years of dating my best friend, I am his fiancée, his future wife.
I know life will always throw us curveballs, that’s inevitable, but as long as I get to go through the journey with Andrew as my husband everything will be perfect. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us both.
