Nicole and Bernie
How We Met
We both work for a popular beach town restaurant in San Diego, CA. I (Nicole) am the Marketing Manager, and Bernie is a waiter. He had a marketing request, and at the same time used it as a reason to talk to me, and eventually ask me out. We instantly clicked, and from that point forward, we were inseparable.
We found that we had so many things in common, one interest being hiking, which was our 4th official date I believe, and then there were many more to come. Our relationship is best described as “When you know, you just know”. It has moved quite fast since we started dating on October 5, 2016, with us moving in together the beginning of January 2017 and engaged in the beginning of April. The most amazing thing is, I feel like I’ve known him my entire life, and nothing has ever felt so normal and right. I’ve always felt like he was more than my boyfriend, or now my fiance….he is my soulmate.
How He Asked
Of course he knew the best way to ask me – when doing the activity we love the most! We were in Zion National Park the first weekend in April (I ran the half marathon there), and my friends and Bernie really wanted to hike the famous Angel’s Landing trail. It’s almost 6,000 ft in elevation and you scale it holding on to a chain. It is not recommended for people who are afraid of heights, which would be me! I wanted to be a good sport though, plus the view from up top is incredible. I soon found out there was more than just a view waiting at the top for me.
Bernie took out the ring and proposed to me, and I almost couldn’t believe what was happening! The funniest part is, due to the altitude and having been hiking for an hour and a half, my fingers were so swollen, so it was tough getting the ring on at first! So through tears and laughter, we got my ring on, and then we hugged and cried. And then had to scale the terrifying mountain again. It was the best day of my life.
