Nicki and Roberto
How We Met
Roberto and I met while I was in my junior year of high school. He was a friend and schoolmate of my brother, putting him 5 years above me, and was over at the house hanging out. I recall how genuine his smile was, and was fluttered at how he seemed so interested in getting to know me, asking me about my life and my hobbies. After he had left, I thought to myself how I wanted to stay connected to him and talk to him more. I made the first move and added him on social media, where we then chatted through messenger on and off. Flash forward to my freshman year of college, we began dating. Although I went to school in the same state, my school was 120 miles from his home. Fast forward to now, we are engaged.
How He Asked
On March 7th, 2015, Roberto first said 3 little words that I now get to hear for the rest of my life. We had been dating for 2 months with a little long distance as I was away at college. We were switching off weekends with him coming to my college town to visit me, and me going back to our hometown. This particular weekend we decided to adventure. We took a ferry over to one of the islands nearby and stayed the weekend at a Bed & Breakfast on the island. This was our first real “getaway”. March 7th, 2015 was the first day we told each other we love one another.
On March 7th, 2018, Roberto and I went back to my college town of Bellingham. He told me he wanted to go there to get some pictures together with our puppy. His sister Ella and her boyfriend Owen, an avid photographer, would meet us up there to do the photos. When we arrived, we went down to a spot below the boardwalk by the water. I could see out of the corner of my eye that he was giving sort of “signs” to Ella and Owen. No sooner, I hear Roberto start to say the words I will remember forever. Roberto turns to me and says, “So, babe – do you remember what I told you on this day 3 years ago? I want to tell you that for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?”
It was an obvious YES, with tears, hugs, and astonishment. I get to spend forever with my very best friend.
