Nephy and Santhosh
How We Met – her side
Santhosh and I have known each other since childhood. We both went to the same church and lived only minutes apart in a city near Dallas, Texas. We were acquaintances then, and nothing more. It’s funny how things work out though. We soon left for college; Santhosh went off to the University of Texas at Austin and I headed off to the University of Houston. We both were miles away from home in new and unfamiliar cities away from our family and friends. One night through the ever popular AOL instant messenger, Santhosh messaged me and we got whisked away in a conversation that lasted late into the night. I can’t remember all we talked about, but I just remember feeling close to home for the first time in a very long time. He made me laugh so much and I remember going to school the next day feeling excited to talk to him again at night.
We spoke every day for almost a year and he soon became my best friend. I wanted to share everything with him and talk to him as much as I could. In March 2009, he officially asked me to be his girlfriend. We were each other’s first relationship. Everyone kept telling me that long distance relationships never work and even more so, that young love doesn’t last but I knew this was different. I won’t lie and tell you that it was easy, because it wasn’t. We had many painful goodbyes and we prayed daily for the time when we would never have to say goodbye again. Nine years went by and I had moved to three different cities. He stayed by my side waiting patiently for me through grad school and residency. We always talk about how ironic it was that our love story only began when we were miles apart from each other, but I believe that’s why we appreciate and enjoy every moment we share together. Long distance relationships require hard work, trust and communication, but it’s completely worth it when it’s with the right person.
How He Asked – his side
Nine years ago I became the luckiest man on earth and I know it’s crazy to think this but I knew early on that I wanted to make Nephy my wife. Throughout our years together, I had gone through countless ideas in my mind of ways I wanted to propose to her but the timing was never right. The distance that kept us apart from each other was a challenge. But when things finally came together in our lives, I began to plan that day I had been dreaming of for years. I recalled having conversations with her of traveling together and experiencing the different views the world could offer us; so I knew that I wanted to propose to her at a spot that would take her breath away. I scoured Google Maps and landed at Point Dume in Malibu. The views were spectacular and I immediately began imagining myself proposing to her there.
Nephy’s younger sister came up with the idea of taking a vacation in Los Angeles where she would convince Nephy to come along for a relaxing weekend. Nephy took the bait and we were all set for the proposal. Her and her sister spent that day in Los Angeles exploring the city. Meanwhile, both of our families graciously flew down to share this special occasion with us. Around 5pm, Nephy’s sister told her that they were going to head to the hotel. Nephy fell asleep on the way which worked out perfectly! She woke up just as the car was parking in the beach parking lot in Malibu close to sunset. There she was surprised to see her older sister waiting for her. She was confused but before she could start piecing it together she was handed a green maxi dress to change into.
Her sister’s then led her to the start of the Point Dume trail where she was handed a sealed envelope with a card I had written. Inside I discussed our love story and how there was no one else I would want to spend the rest of my life with. She couldn’t stop crying as she read the words of the promises I planned to keep on this new journey of our lives that would begin at this very trail. At the end of the card I told her that I loved her and asked her to walk along this trail where she would find help along the way. At the first fork in the trail, both our parents were waiting anxiously for her with hugs and smiles. As she walked through the bends along the trail, she came across my siblings waiting with excitement as she entered the last stretch.
At this moment I could see Nephy making her way up to me. Despite all the beauty around me, I could not take my eyes off of her. I took her hand and lead her to the edge of the cliff where I could not contain my emotion anymore. I can barely remember anything that happened except that she made me the happiest man on earth by saying yes! I wiped away her tears and told her that I loved her with all my heart. We spent the rest of the evening enjoying each other’s company at a restaurant in Malibu with our families. I felt that the only thing left to do after getting engaged to my dream girl was to visit the happiest place in the world the following day, Disneyland!
