Nathaniel and Ashley
How We Met
So the first time I remember noticing Nathaniel was during Vacation Bible School at his church. (I had gone with a friend). We were young, maybe eighth grade or freshman year of high school. I remember always noticing him. It was like I had a magnetic draw towards him. When he was in a room, I was aware of where he was or what he was doing. Is that creepy?! I’d never really felt that way so I knew I had a crush. I had never talked or flirted or even been noticed by a guy that I can remember. I watched for a couple of years as he dated a few other girls and we both grew up a bit. Then I believe it was during our sophomore year of high school (2010-2011), he noticed me (Finally!). We started texting and talking, getting to know one another more. Then suddenly (and stupidly) I stopped talking to him for a while. I felt like I wasn’t ready for a relationship (even though I had never been in a relationship!!). I couldn’t stop thinking about him after school ended. I realized that I missed him, so I finally got the courage to text him first. We started talking again and became even closer over the summer. Junior year started and we had never really talked in person (technology generation!). So we would awkwardly say Hi when we saw each other. It makes me laugh to think about now! I remember specifically on my birthday in October, he stopped me in Psychology class and told me Happy Birthday. I FLIPPED out on the inside. The butterflies were so crazy! Then the coming November he asked me to be his girlfriend! I was so excited and nervous! Now, five years and seven months later, we are still crazy about each other! Nathaniel was my first boyfriend, my first kiss, my first love! He has treated me like a princess. I couldn’t have asked for a sweeter, more Godly man to spend the rest of my life with!
How He Asked
A little bit of a backstory: so throughout high school, Nathaniel was in Boy Scouts. He worked hard and got the honor of becoming an Eagle Scout. There is a large camp near Beckley, WV. He told me that there was a really important Eagle Scout ceremony that he wanted me to attend with him. They were going to honor him at this camp along other Eagle Scouts. He told me it was a pretty big deal and that I should dress up! We even went shopping and he bought me a new dress! So fast forward a week or two later and its the day of the ceremony, June 4th. I drove to my parent’s house and met him where we would ride together to Beckley. As we were on our way, we had to pass through Fayetteville, WV. This is where the New River Gorge Bridge is located. It is a gorgeous location for hiking and exploring. This is a place where we have been to many times before and we love exploring the area. Instead of driving over the bridge, we decided to drive down the old road that goes down into the gorge. The old bridge that goes across the water is called Fayette Station. Before we crossed the old bridge, Nathaniel wanted to look around at this place we had discovered together last summer. It had gorgeous pools of water, waterfalls and huge rocks all around. I told Nathaniel I wasn’t dressed for hiking but he said we wouldn’t go far. So as we looked around, he wanted me to get on this specific rock so I could see the water better. When I turned around to face him, he was down on one knee. Honestly, it didn’t even feel real. I was so shocked! He asked me to marry him and I said “Is this real?! and he said yes! and that’s when I said, “Yes! Of course!!” Then he stood and hugged me and we kissed. I couldn’t believe it was finally happening! I had been looking forward to this for so long and it was perfect! I was crying and remember saying “I don’t have waterproof mascara on! Is my makeup okay?!” He told me I still looked beautiful. He then told me that his sister (who is majoring in Journalism) was hiding taking pictures of the whole proposal! I couldn’t believe it! Then he told me that both of our parents were on their way to meet us. He had everything planned and timed so perfectly! Caroline (his sister) took our pictures and we had a mini engagement photo shoot. It was so surreal and amazing. He handled everything so well! Oh, and by the way, there was no ceremony for the Eagle Scouts! That was a whole fib to get me dressed up and to the proposal location, and I had no idea!
