Natasha and Brennan

How We Met

I remember the first time I met Brennan, he picked me up in his car in our home time to have an El Presidente Margarita. It must’ve been a good margarita because years later, we’re still regularly going on dinner dates. During college, I worked at a retail store with Brennan’s older brother, Eamon, and we had a group of mutual friends that would hang out from time to time. After graduating, I moved to DC for a couple of years. It was a great time in my life, exploring a new city and getting settled into my career. I kept in touch with my friends back home in Massachusetts and would occasionally visit.

Eamon had randomly mentioned his brother Brennan was leaving the army and thought it would be a good idea for us to meet. I personally didn’t think that was a good idea because I was living in DC at the time and didn’t think a long distance relationship was in the cards. But then I ended up visiting home during the last weekend of September in 2012. During that time, Brennan and I had exchanged numbers via his brother and had sent a couple of messages back and forth.

When I told Brennan about my plans to be back in town, he offered to pick me up from the train station (which I thought was really sweet since we hadn’t officially met yet). That first date, the second, third, and so on went so well that we ended up dating long distance for 8 months. As much as I loved DC, I had always wanted to end up back North to be closer to my family. Brennan and I always had our love of family in common, and one of my favorite things about him is how family oriented he is. So with my desire to be closer to my loved ones, plus the new addition of Brennan in my life, it seemed like the perfect time to head back to Boston and see where life would take us.

How He Asked

Brennan and I had spent the last several years together focusing on our careers, traveling across the country, and exploring New England. One of our favorite places to visit is, Newport, Rhode Island. It has gorgeous beaches and delicious restaurants, so I thought we were heading into a normal weekend of exploration and food. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the springtime, which was very welcomed after our cold Boston winters. Looking back, I noticed Brennan seemed a bit quiet during lunch, but I figured he was enjoying the sound of the live band playing.

After lunch, we enjoyed a long stroll through the oceanfront cliff walk, overlooking a never-ending row of beautiful homes. This walk was also very quiet, and I remember asking if everything was okay. Looking back, I now realize that Brennan was looking for a perfect place to propose. Finally, we came to a halt near a cluster of rocks by the ocean. Brennan kneeled down on one knee and asked me to spend my life with him. I was so excited, surprised, overjoyed, and replied: “of course”! I’m so thrilled to be marrying my best friend, and can’t wait to celebrate with everyone we love in September!
