Shakira and Daryl | Music Video Proposal
How we met: In October of 2009, Oakwood University hosted its annual “College Days.” This is a weekend when high school seniors can visit the school and spend time on the campus in order to get a feel for it and decide if they are interested in attending the school. Shakira came from a high school in Texas, while I traveled to Alabama from North Carolina. During the first few hours, we were introduced to each other via a mutual friend. Throughout the remainder of the weekend the relationship began to flourish. Although we went back to our respective states just 2 days later, we kept in touch throughout our senior year of high school, and began dating the following year while we were both freshmen at Oakwood University.
How he asked:Music is an interest that we share. In May 2013, we decided to join forces with a friend who produces music and create an original love song. We wanted the song to capture the youthful, happy, bouncy relationship that we share. It was a fun project and we love how it turned out. As graduation approached, I knew I wanted to ask her to marry me. The only question was, “how should I do it?” I wanted it to be original, personal, and once again representative of our relationship. Knowing Shakira, I knew that she didn’t want many people involved. The tricky part came when trying to determine how to keep external involvement to a minimum, and how to propose inconspicuously, while also capturing high quality picture and video. That is when I thought of the idea of recording a music video to our original song. This way, no one would be involved except us and a highly trained videographer with a great camera. Also, if the cameras are already rolling, she wouldn’t see the proposal coming. So I reached out to a friend who is a film maker and over the course of two days we recorded the video. After the video was finished being edited, I told her that it would be a good idea for us to record one more scene just to make it complete. Without hesitation she agreed, and we set up an appointment to record one final scene. On May 2, 2014 around 4pm; on the campus on Oakwood University where it all began, I proposed to the love of my life. The videographer captured the moment and added the proposal to the video. She never saw it coming.
