Monica and Simon
How we met
6 years ago, Simon and I met at a bar in the Old Port of Montreal. I was there with my friends celebrating a birthday and Simon was there with his group of friends on a ‘boys night’. He came up to talk to us and bought us all drinks. At the end of the night, we exchanged numbers and went our separate ways. One week later, we went on our first date. We found out that we had some friends in common and had actually studied at the same library for most our university years. We felt comfortable with each other right away. It happened very naturally, nothing felt forced, it seemed like we had known each other forever.
How he asked
Simon planned a weekend getaway trip for us and didn’t tell me the destination. He even called my work to ask my boss to have the Friday afternoon off. I only knew that it would be somewhere hot so that I could know how to pack. Simon is very spontaneous and it was not the first time we had gone away on such short notice, so I didn’t suspect anything when he told me. When we arrived to the airport, I found out that we were going to Miami and flying first class! Simon often flies for work and has accumulated many flyers rewards points, so I didn’t think much into it when he suggested that we fly first class.
After checking into our hotel, we had dinner at Hakkasan. The food was delicious, but Simon was not really eating and going to the bathroom… a lot. During his many bathroom trips, he was actually talking to his friend who was decorating our hotel room for the proposal while we were at dinner. We ended up taking the rest of our food to go and headed back to the hotel.
As we were going to our room, Simon gave me a fortune cookie. I opened it and saw my name. I actually thought that the restaurant somehow found out my name and put it in the fortune cookie… talk about good service! I read the whole fortune and I couldn’t believe what I was reading until Simon got down on one knee with the ring. Simon had actually bought individual fortune cookies in order to slip his message into one and had to glue the package back together, he even had extras just in case one broke! I started laughing because I couldn’t believe how clueless I was the whole time.
When we got into our room, the room was beautifully decorated with rose petals and champagne. The moment felt so surreal. Simon had been looking for the perfect moment to proposed, but couldn’t find one, so he created the perfect moment with the help of my family and friends. It was definitely a night to remember.
