Monica and Leonides
How We Met
Leo and I met during the summer before my junior year of college. I was in nursing school and started a new job as a nurse’s aide. I met Leo the first day of orientation and I can still remember every moment clearly. My coworker and I were walking down the hallway, asking all our other coworkers for lunch orders so we could go out and pick up food for them. I remember seeing a male nurse (Leo) at the nurse’s station and thinking he was super cute. However, I’m pretty shy when meeting people for the first time so I knew that I could never be the first to start a conversation. Little did I know I also caught Leo’s attention that day (he still talks about how he remembers my hair in a braid the first time he saw me).
Ever since our first encounter, Leo and I only saw each other a few times throughout the next few weeks. We worked opposite shifts so we would only see each other in passing (when he was leaving his shift and when I was coming in). One night at work, a coworker asked me, “Monica, are you single? Someone wants me to ask you for him”. I gave her a sassy response saying, “If someone wants to know if i’m single, they should just ask me themselves!” Later that week, I was at the nurse’s station about to leave when Leo walked up to me and asked me if I was single and if I wanted to go out on a date with him. I decided to say “yes” and on our first date, I remember thinking that I’ve never met anyone who could make me laugh so much. You can say that the rest is history!
How He Asked
One thing that Leo and I love doing together is traveling. We have always talked about taking a road trip to Canada since we first started dating. Several weeks ago, we saw that there was a groupon for a trip to the Niagara Falls. We have both never been there before, so we bought it right away and began planning our trip. While I was planning wineries to visit and wine tours to go on, Leo was planning the perfect proposal!
Early Friday morning, we started our trip to Canada. We also had the first snow of the season on Friday morning in New Jersey so the roads driving up were pretty terrible. Two hours into our drive, Leo turned and said to me, “Babe, we should turn around. The roads are so bad.” I was really sad because we had looked forward to this trip for weeks so I told him that we should try driving a little bit longer, and that we could turn around if the roads didn’t get better. Later on, Leo told me that this was a way for him to trick me so that I wouldn’t have any clue about the proposal! Hours later, we finally arrived at Canada and that night during dinner, Leo kept telling me that we “HAD” to visit the Skylon Tower the next day.
After breakfast Saturday morning, Leo and I made our way to the Skylon Tower. We got on the elevator and went to the observatory at top of the tower. The view as we were going up the elevator was amazing and I had absolutely NO idea that this was just moments before Leo was going to ask me to be his wife. Even though it was freezing outside, Leo and I decided to go out to take some pictures and see the view. I remember being so focused on trying to get a great picture of the Falls on my phone that I didn’t really pay attention to what Leo was doing. In the corner of my eye, I saw Leo walk up to a couple and give them his phone and gopro. I didn’t think too much of it because Leo always walks up to random couples and asks them to take pictures of us. That’s why when I turned around and saw him walk towards me, I was thinking in my head that we were just going to take a normal picture together. To my surprise, Leo got down to one knee and all I could scream was “WHAT! Is this real life?!”
I couldn’t believe that this was finally the moment that I have dreaming about forever. The first thing I remembered was seeing my best friend and the man of my dreams down on one knee, asking me “Monica, I love you so much, will you marry me?” (Later on, Leo told me that he had his speech planned and that he practiced it so many times but forgot everything). The second thing I remembered was the ring that he had in his hand was absolutely beautiful, perfect, and so sparkly!!!! All I could say in that moment was “YES!!!” We kissed and couldn’t stop giggling because we were so excited! I couldn’t stop hugging and kissing him! Even though we could’ve stayed for hours, it was freezing outside and we had to step in to warm up.
Afterwards, we thanked the couple who took the pictures and video of us, and then Leo and I went to a winery and celebrated by sipping champagne and going on a champagne tasting tour.
Everything about our proposal and trip to Canada was perfect! Leo, I am beyond ecstatic to marry you and I can’t wait for the many more adventures to come in the future.
