Monica and Austin
How We Met: It was the first day of junior year in high school, he sat behind me in our history class. We could never stop talking to each other and became great friends. He was a football player and I was a pommie. Senior year he ended up being the football player I was in charge of. I decorated his house and he also was my dance partner for our homecoming assembly.
Although we obviously were interested in each other, we never dated in high school. It wasn’t until my twentieth birthday he showed up to my party. He bumped into me and broke my birthday tiara. I called him the next day and gave him a hard time about it. I really didn’t care, it was just a great excuse to talk to him. He picked me up, bought me a new one, and took me out to lunch. We have talked every single day since then. I still have the broken tiara in my room.
How He Asked: I have been begging to go up north to see the stars all summer. We both finally had a day off, so planned to go after I got off of work. We drove up to the Mogollon Rim and made it by sunset. Right before we turned into our spot he told me he had a surprise for me! We get out of the truck and he had a picnic set up with wine and Godiva chocolate covered strawberries. We sat and enjoyed the view and he said he had one more surprise.
He asked me to go to the truck with him, so I got up and started walking but he stopped me and gave me a huge kiss. That’s something he always does, so I didn’t find it suspicous. Then he told me how much he loves me and how he promises to protect me… I honestly can’t remember it all because once he got down on one knee I was so overwhelmed with emotion I forgot! I started sobbing and said “Are you serious?!
YES!” I also don’t remember even looking at the ring, I just wanted to hug and kiss him!
He placed the ring on my finger and then my parents and our best of friends came out of their hiding spots. We celebrated with some champagne and then the two of us spent the night looking at the stars and talking about the exciting road ahead of us. I felt like I was in a country song. It was the best night of my life and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friend!
