Michelle and Chris
How We Met
You know how some people call themselves “high school sweethearts”? Well, I guess you could say that Chris and I are 3rd grade sweethearts. I met Chris way back when we were about 8 years old, and after fading in and out of each other’s lives, we finally became a couple when we were paired up for my friend’s Sweet 15 birthday party. Always a charmer, Chris came up with the line, “I want you to be more than just my dance partner.” We were dating way back when we didn’t have cell phones, drivers’ licenses, or jobs. Facebook wasn’t yet invented and our nights were spent begging our parents to sign off the dial-up internet so we could call each other from our kitchen house phones. I have loved Chris since the day I met him, and I was lucky enough to experience every milestone with him by my side from our childhood all the way to today.
These are a couple of the earliest photo I have of us, note my retainer ;)
How He Asked
Chris and I were beyond excited for our vacation in Walt Disney World (our favorite place on earth) during the week of Valentine’s Day (my favorite holiday of all). Of course I made us matching Mickey and Minnie sweatshirts and Chris lovingly agreed to entertain my embarrassingly nerdy idea.
We stayed at a budget hotel about 30 minutes from the parks, and Chris had been leaving me little surprises and notes every morning on the bedside table to make the trip even more special.
On Valentine’s Day (and every day, really!) we were committed to riding rides and eating popcorn until the very last minute Magic Kingdom was open. Even the pouring rain couldn’t ruin our fun.
When the park was finally closing, we both whined about how we couldn’t bear to leave and end the magic. We hopped on the monorail and Chris suggested we get off at a random stop instead of the parking lot, and explore the incredible luxury Disney hotels we’d always dreamed of staying in one day. Of course I agreed.
We exited the monorail at the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, known as the “crown jewel” of Walt Disney World, and a place I could only ever dream of staying. I noticed Chris put his bags down on a bench nearby, but I was too busy taking pictures of the castle to see that he rested his cell phone on a ledge, carefully beginning to record the moment he had planned.
We walked by the water, looking out over the lake at the Cinderella Castle, lit up pink in the night sky. Chris began telling me how amazing the trip had been and how he’s thankful to have me as his best friend all of these years. Before I knew it, he got down on one knee and began tearing up as he said, “Michelle, will you marry me?”
Of course I cried and cried and hugged him for what felt like forever. I was so happy that I wanted to get back to the car and start calling my family and friends with the news right away. That’s when Chris unveiled another surprise…
“Well,” he said, “we’re actually staying HERE now.”
NO WAY. ARE YOU SERIOUS? [insert various words of shock/disbelief/excitement].
But then, reality set in. My phone was dead and I was gross and sweaty from a day in the park in the rain. I had no clothes to change into, no toothbrush, you get the idea.
Chris reminded me not to worry and just enjoy this moment. So I followed him into the most incredible hotel I have ever stepped foot into. A live jazz band played as we checked in and went up to our room. This was unbelievable and I was shaking the whole time.
We got up to our room and I opened the door to see rose petals, candles, and tons of decorations all over. Again, I was speechless. It took me a few seconds to realize it, but all of my dresses were neatly hung in the closet, my toothbrush was in the bathroom, and all of my belongings were already in the room.
HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?
Chris smiled and told me that while we were at the park, he secretly had my mom and sister moving things from our hotel over to this new room. This was our home for the rest of the trip!
The next day, we rode a private boat around the resort, stopping in the middle to watch the fireworks show over the castle. Even as I write this now, I still can’t believe the most incredibly perfect day of my life when my best friend of so many years asked me to marry him.
