Lauren and Michael

How We Met

Michael and I were 15 when we met at a high school play. I wasn’t really into going and apparently, neither was he. My friends continued to beg me to go until I finally gave in, and thank God I did. As we sat in our row and waited for the play to start, my friend explained that we would be meeting up with her friend, who was starring in the play, and a group of her friends. At the same time, we were admiring a cute boy a couple of rows a head of us. The play ended and we all met up to go to the diner. Long and behold, that cute boy was there and his name was Michael. I’m already a shy person but now, with this cute boy in my presence, I simply didn’t know what to do. Most of the night, I had my back toward him because I was too nervous to even look his way. The whole night I was thinking, “This kid is going to think there is something wrong with me. He’s never going to like me.” Eventually, the night ended and we said our goodbyes. I was so disappointed in myself not knowing if I would ever see him again. A couple of days later, my friend told me that Michael thought I was pretty and that he wanted to hang out again. A rush of excitement ran through my body knowing I had another chance to speak to him. One Saturday night, the girls and I were hanging out at my house when Michael and his friends called and asked us to see a 12 o’clock movie. My parents, being parents, freaked out. They thought we were crazy going to a movie at 12 o’clock with a bunch boys that we didn’t know well. Of course, we convinced them to let us go and we did. Michael was seated next to me in the theater and we talked through out the whole movie. From that day on, my life completely changed. Michael and I started off as bestfriends and became inseparable. On September 4, 2005, my birthday, he asked me to be his girlfriend. Of course, I said “yes!” From 2005 to 2017, Michael and I have been by each other’s side. We have laughed together, cried together and have experienced the most amazing things. On December 25, 2017, I was able to say “yes!” again, when he asked me to marry him. I’m now engaged to that cute boy and I’m so proud to call him my fiancé and can’t wait for the day when I get to call him my husband.

How He Asked

Every Christmas, my family has a nice gathering of family and friends. Due to unfortunate events, we had a flood which meant we were not able to have Christmas this year. This year, I would be spending Christmas with my boyfriend and his family. Ironically, this would be the first Christmas that we would be spending together. The night was starting to wind down, we had dessert and changed into our funny Christmas pajamas. We gathered around the Christmas tree and started to open our gifts. In the midst of all of this, Michael asked me to go down the basement with him to help bring up some more gifts. I followed him down the basement where I turned into complete darkness followed by a candle lit path filled with rose petals.

At this point, my heart was pounding out of my chest because at first, I didn’t know what was happening. Michael continued to say, “come here,” as I was led to an array of balloons which spelled out “Marry Me.” He dropped down on one knee, and asked the question I’ve been waiting to be asked my whole life! With tears of joy, I murmured, “Yes!”

Our families rush in with champagne and the room filled up with even more love, and of course, more tears. On September 4, 2005 I said “yes!” Now, on December 25, 2017, I was able to say “yes!” again, when he asked me to marry him. I’m now engaged to that cute boy and I’m so proud to call him my fiancé but I can’t wait for the day when I get to call him my husband. I always loved Christmas and it’s our favorite holiday but now, I love it even more!
