Melinda and Dennis
Dennis and I are in our 60s, been married before and have known each other for just over 4 years. In that time we have traveled a lot. We traveled to Europe 5 times, Hawaii, Canada, New Orleans and all over the east coast. Doing presentations at conferences all over the world is part of Dennis’ work as a professor and because I am retired from my career, I am free to travel with him. This past May (2017) went to Paris as a side trip after a work conference in Luxembourg. We arrived by train and he suggested that we go to the Eiffel Tower that night in order to see the lights of the city. I had been hoping for a proposal and thought “This is it!!! He will propose at the top of the tower! I will just have to wait until tonight.”
So, now to get through the day. When we travel, we always put a lock in that city to represent our love. ( A padlock with our names and the date on it.) After securing it to an object near water, we throw the keys in the water. This custom started in Paris and we were excited to be in Paris to add our lock to the thousands already on the wire wall. I had ordered a special lock online. A red one! As we snapped the lock in place, Dennis stopped a passer-by and ask him if he would take a picture of us with our lock. The gentleman was very nice and took our camera, backs up a few steps and takes a few shots. I thanked the man and reached for the camera when I heard Dennis say “Just one more.” I’m thinking “well, ok, one more.”
But as I turn back to Dennis, he is on one knee holding a box with a beautiful diamond ring!!! “Will you marry me?” he says. Oh my God! He really caught me off guard! NOW? And not the top of the Eiffel Tower? Well….. OK, SURE, why the hell not!!?!! The only thing I could think of doing is to also get on my knee and say “yes…YES…YES!!!!” and kiss him!
A big crowd gathered around us and started applauding!!! The whole time this is going on, our “photographer” is clicking away! We flew home a few days later and shared our wonderful news with our family and friends. After some thought we decided to set the date for 9/9/18. This happens to be on our 5 year anniversary of the day we met.
