Meghan and Evan
How We Met
The first time I can remember meeting Evan was in middle school choir. He sat in front of me and I thought his long hair was super awesome. I was pretty outgoing compared to him and his bashfulness so when I first struck up a conversation with him, it definitely showed our opposite personalities. He was shy but still talked to me and eventually, we became friends and spent lots of time together outside of class.
Fast forward 3 years, we were getting ready to go on a trip to Paris with our high school choir. We spent many weekend nights caroling around town with the group to raise money for our trip. We wound up hanging out after each time and watched tons of movies together at my house. At the same time, Evan and I were both working on our school musical so spent even more time together then. We became best friends and pretty much inseparable. I always thought to myself, “he’s so sweet and cool but he would never like me”. Clearly, I was wrong, and I am so glad I was. A few weeks after my 17th birthday, we were in Paris on our trip and we spent the ENTIRE time together. He started putting his arm around me in front of everyone and I was freaking out on the inside. About 10 days in the most beautiful city ever must’ve done it for us and soon after, we “officially” started dating.
How He Asked
I was working and going to graduate school in Nevada and Evan was stationed in Texas with the Air Force. We had been in a long distance relationship all through college so we became experts in traveling back and forth to see each other. He wanted to come visit for my birthday so I decided we should go up to Lake Tahoe since I had a long weekend off. I didn’t know it at the time, but I set him up perfectly to pop the question.
On the morning of my birthday, we video chatted with my family back home and he made me my favorite cinnamon rolls for breakfast before we headed out for Lake Tahoe. It was an awesome start to the day until the cinnamon rolls wore off and I started to get hangry. Evan knows when this is coming on or how to handle it when it starts happening. What a trooper!! He had planned for us to go on a hike but all I wanted to do was get lunch. I have to admit, I was on another level that day. He got me some food (he’s an angel) and once we got to Tahoe, found a quiet spot to eat on the beach. I was back to my normal self so we were able to continue on with the day.
We got close to where we were going to hike from and he told me we were going to snowshoe. I had never done it before so I was pretty nervous. We started our hike to Castle Rock and it was a beautiful day. I was strolling along in my snowshoes and Evan tells me now that he just wanted to drag me to get to the top. He had to ask me to speed it up so we could get to the top without making anything too obvious; he was so nervous. We had not seen one other person during our entire hike. When we finally got to the top, the view was breathtaking. We took some pictures and enjoyed the scenery. Then, Evan asked me if I wanted my birthday present and I said, “right here? sure!” He told me to turn around and close my eyes.
We were somewhat on the side of a cliff so I was a little hesitant to stand there with my eyes closed. It felt like forever that I was balancing there, but eventually, Evan told me to open my eyes and turn around. When I turned around, he was down on one knee with the ring. I started freaking out and crying and he said “wait!” because he hadn’t been able to get any words out yet. He said some of the sweetest words I’ve ever heard and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. Obviously, I said yes!!! We hugged, kissed, and cried happy tears at one of the most beautiful and romantic spots I could have ever imagined, almost 7 years after our trip to Paris. We video chatted some of our friends and family from the top of the mountain before we had to head back down. Evan took me to an amazing dinner to celebrate and we got to enjoy each other’s company with giant smiles on our faces. It was perfect!”
