How We Met
#WeMetOnTwitter!! At the time, he had a very prominent music blog. He was very opinionated on his Twitter account, and I had strong opinions of my own. Initially, we traded insults– I told him he was wrong and he told me I was clueless… We were essentially Twitter enemies. Slowly but surely, we began to understand and respect each other a little bit more and we eventually started talking via direct message more frequently. To our surprise, we hit it off, but had a few obstacles in our way as he was located in Miami and I am a born and bred New Yorker!
I was in a horrible job in NYC at the time and decided I needed a change. So, I quit and was on a flight to Miami (convenient) two days later for a conference. After months of FaceTime dates, our first in-person meeting was at the airport, and our first kiss was that night on the beach under the stars. We were very realistic that a long distance relationship may not work, but we were willing to try because it was truly love at first sight!
How He Asked
I was totally surprised. We were walking along the beach, in a very similar spot to where we had our first kiss when he tripped on a rock. A strange package was revealed underneath. It was a small, rectangular mass of twine and brown canvas. On the top, written in black marker, was a bible verse– Psalm 143:8. He went to look it up on his phone while he handed the package to me to examine. Naturally, I started curiously unwrapping it. I wondered what stranger had placed this here and what they wanted us to find. Then, he read the verse:
“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
for to you, I entrust my life.”
He finished just as I had finished unwrapping the package, and inside was a small wooden box. The rest was a blur, but he got down on one knee and of course, I said YES!! It was only afterward, in the chorus of applause from everyone on the beach, that I noticed the camera crew strategically placed along our entire walk. I figured there was some South Beach-style photoshoot going on, but only then did I realize that the cameras were pointed at us the entire time!
