Megan and Tyler
Tyler and I met our freshman year of high school. We both played basketball for our school, so we had quite a few mutual friends, one of whom introduced us at a football game. Later that school year, shortly after my 15th birthday, Tyler asked me to be his girlfriend. About a year after we started dating, we received news that his dad’s job would take Tyler and his family to Arizona. Only being 16 at the time, Tyler and I didn’t really know what to do, so we agreed that would would try out the long-distance thing and see how it worked. We had been dating a year, and we knew we had something special, so we didn’t want to throw that away…but at the same time, we both knew we were really young and had a lot of life ahead of us. So we gave it a shot. With many trips to visit each other, Skype calls, and even some snail mail, we made it through high school. We kept up the long-distance relationship as we both stayed in our respective states to attend college.
How he asked: One Friday evening during our junior year of college, I had plans to get my nails done and then babysit for a friend, and Tyler told me he was working all night.
I met up with my mom after I got off work, and we went to get our nails done. While we were getting our nails done, mygirlfriend called me and said, “Hey! My mom drove out for the weekend to surprise us and she is going to watch the kids tonight. Since I don’t need you to babysit anymore, do you and your mom want to meet for dinner instead?” We happily agreed, and my friend told us that she had some shopping to do and then she was going to take a walk down by the lake that was near the shops. She told my mom and I to meet her near the lake when we got there, and then we would head to a nearby restaurant. The plan sounded perfect to me!
Shortly after the phone call, my mom and I left the nail salon and headed to Dos Lagos, the area with the shops, the restaurants, and the lake. On our way to Dos Lagos, Tyler called me while he was “on his break at work”, and we chatted for a few. Little did I know, he had just finished having a beer with my dad, asking for my dad’s blessing to marry to me. Tyler and I hung up, and my mom and I hopped out of the car and started toward the lake. While we were walking toward the lake, she told me she forgot her jacket in the car, so she would catch up with me in a minute.
As I walked down to the lake, I looked for my friend. I didn’t see her, so I called her. She assured me she was sitting on a bench behind one of the restaurants, so I headed that way. While walking toward the restaurant, I saw a guy out of the corner of my eye. He looked an awful lot like Tyler, but I thought to myself, “That’s really weird. There’s no way that’s Tyler. I just talked to him, and he was at work. Plus, we don’t have plans to see each other until next month.” I kept walking the opposite direction, away from the guy and toward the restaurant my friend was sitting behind. While I was walking, I peeked over my shoulder to get another look at this guy that looked so much like Tyler, and I noticed he was following me. At that very moment, I realized that Tyler’s look-alike was actually Tyler!
After repeatedly asking him, “What are you doing here!?”, he said a few precious words to me, and then he got down on one knee.
Little did I know, his family, who drove all the way from Arizona, and my family both watched this all unfold from the parking lot.
In just a month and a half, Tyler and I will both be graduating from college, and he will be moving back to California! After six years of long-distance, we will finally be living in the same place again. Shortly after he moves back, we will tie the knot and start our forever!
