Megan and Shane
How We Met
Shane and I met in August of 2012, just a couple months after the worst day of my life. My Dad had just recently passed away from cancer and my family was still in the stages of shock and grief.
Shane and I both went to the same college and he worked for security there. I was in the bookstore with my sister one Friday before classes started and he was on guard. We casually talked while I waited for my number to be called to go in and get my books. When it was my turn, I didn’t want to leave him. I barely knew him at all, yet I felt so connected. He felt the same way (according to the way my sister said he couldn’t keep his eyes off of me).
As I walked out, however, we gave each other a small wave and that was it… I was never going to see him again, and I was heartbroken that he didn’t ask for my number.
My sister and I were walking out to leave and she stopped me. She told me to just go back and give him my number. She reminded me that life was short, as we well knew at that point. So I gathered my courage, rushed back down to the bookstore, practically threw my number at him and rushed off. He waited three long miserable days to call me.. but the rest is history!
How He Asked
On Friday, the night before the big day, Shane told me he was ordered in to work the last half of the 1st shift… typical, he’s a deputy so this happens a lot. Thankfully I had a shopping trip planned with my mom and sister to keep me busy. Shane left Saturday morning for work and I was headed to my mom’s shortly after. We left my moms around noon and made a stop at the cemetery where my dad is, which is something we usually would do when it’s just us three.
As we pulled in I noticed several cars.. then I saw them. The Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard standing at attention behind my dad’s stone and the most handsome deputy I’ve ever laid eyes on walking up to open my car door. He lead me out to the grave where he gave the sweetest speech. He ended with “I know I can’t bring your dad back, but I can make you happy every day and always make you smile” As he said my full name, the Honor Guard fell into a slow salute and he got down on one knee.
Shane came into my life exactly when I needed him. We fully believe we had some divine help in finding each other. He’s been there for every break down and tear; and has always brought me back to happiness. He’s shown me what true love really is and I’m forever grateful to him for all he’s done for me. I can’t wait to be his wife and spend the rest of my life with him by my side.
