Megan and Ryan
How We Met
Ryan and I are middle school, high school, and soon-to-be college sweethearts. We have known each other since second grade – we went to the same elementary school. In 8th grade we danced to “I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing” at the winter formal. A couple days later, December 4th, he asked me out to the movies. The rest, as they say, is history.
Over the past 8 years, we have had our ups and downs just like every relationship does. We have been long-distance for about three and a half years now. I go to a small liberal arts college in Central Illinois as a nursing major while he attends a private college in Massachusetts doing NCAA gymnastics and studying criminal justice. It has been very difficult but the light at the end of the tunnel is growing brighter and brighter. It’s true that distance makes the heart grow fonder, and no distance or amount of time is great enough to pull us apart. Graduation, and the beginning of the rest of our lives together, can’t come fast enough.
How He Asked
On Tuesday November 24th, I drove home from school for Thanksgiving break. I was supposed to pick Ryan up from the airport that night, but when I arrived home he was already there waiting for me. He told me we were going for a walk at Glacier Ridge, one of the parks we like to walk/run at. When we arrived, he told me to put on hiking boots and we set out on the mile walk to the Kame, a hill that overlooks the whole park. As we arrived at the top of the Kame right as the sun was starting to set, I could see Ryan had laid out a heart made of evergreen boughs entwined with beautiful flowers and petals.
I was so surprised and so excited, I turned right around and said “shut up!” We both laughed, and then he got down on one knee, said my full name, and asked me to marry him. I said yes of course! We couldn’t stop hugging each other, I was just so happy and surprised.
Ryan’s brother Russell was there taking pictures of the whole thing. We did a mini photo shoot because the moment and lighting and setting were just too perfect, and we wanted to capture every second of happiness. Nothing could keep the goofy grins off our faces!
