Megan and Mikey

How We Met

Mikey and I have known each other for almost twenty years. We went to elementary school together where I served as Class President in fifth grade and he was my Class Vice President and in fourth grade. Because of our grade difference we did not really have the same group of friends, just always knew each other through our involvement in elementary school government and elementary school speech competitions.

How He Asked

Mikey and I became friends long after our student government days. I was working at the bowling alley in town at nights and was attending junior college during the day, Mikey worked at a produce warehouse at nights and attended the same junior college although our paths never crossed there. He had two nights off a week, and he and his friends would come bowl every Wednesday. After about six months of shy flirting Mikey and I decided that it would be funny to prank our friends and convince them all we were dating. Within a month we realized it was what we both wanted and have been together for the past five years since. We made it through long distance while we both finished college, and through a very demanding schedule while he completed his police academy.

On February 26, 2015 we attended a shift change dinner for his department with another officer and his girlfriend and Mikey suggested we go bowling afterwards. I had quit working there a year earlier to pursue teaching so I thought it would be fun to go back and see everyone that I used to work with and all of my regular customers. We were set up to bowl two games, and after one game of taking a turn, running around saying hi to people I hadn’t seen in awhile, and not spending much time with Mikey and our friends Tyler and Nicole I sat down halfway through the second game and told them to finish my game for me. Tyler was adamant that I finish my own game and his girlfriend jumped in and offered to take every other turn so I agreed and got up to throw one last ball. When I turned around Mikey was down on one knee with the most beautiful ring I had ever seen. Neither of us remember it word for word but he said something along the lines of “You are the most stubborn person I’ve ever met but I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you, will you marry me?”

I happy cried, said yes, and jumped into his arms. He is the most loving and attentive partner a girl could dream of and the most compassionate police officer I know. He makes me so proud on a daily basis and I am so lucky to get to be his wife.
