Meagan and Cody
How We Met
Cody and I started dating on August 18, 2012. We grew up in the same small town, and had mutual friends, but it wasn’t until I saw him in Walmart (of all places) in the summer of 2012 and thought to myself “wow, he’s really cute!” I remember finding my mom and telling her that I saw this really cute guy in Walmart wearing a burgundy shirt. I even went back to where he was shopping with his mom and brother to get another look whenever I realized that I knew him! I casually walked by him and his family on the school supply aisle, pretending to be on the phone with my mom to see what kind of glue my brother needed for school just so I could say hi.
I also knew Cody played football, so I picked up a handful of athletic tape and walked past him again, hoping he would think I was into sports and that would make him interested in me. I was certain my plan worked, and was awaiting a Facebook message from him but about a week passed by and there was no message, however, I couldn’t get the Walmart boy out of my head. It was the day before I started my first day of high school, and I was sitting in the living room painting my nails (pink to be exact) with one of my best friends, Leslee, whenever I got the idea to just message him instead of waiting around to see if he was going to message me.
We talked back and forth for a while and eventually he asked for my number. I’ve talked to him every day since that night! After texting for a few days, he asked me to go on a date to the Chinese restaurant in our town. I didn’t like Chinese at the time so I was relived whenever he asked if I would rather go to the Beaufort Waterfront with him, his Mom, Aunt, and brother. I remember feeling nervous but confident, I was so excited to get to know Cody! I remember how easy it was to talk to him, and I never felt awkward talking to him. First, we went to a cute little restaurant in downtown Beaufort, Q On The Bay. I was nervous, but I felt better after we both asked for ranch to go with our french fries. (this becomes important later) After lunch his mom dropped us off at the movies, neither one of us can even recall what movie it was! As we were in the movies, he started copying everything I did…I thought it was hilarious! After the movies his mom took us back to the waterfront, while everyone else went shopping. We held hands and walked up and down the waterfront talking about everything in the world. We went to an ice cream shop, and Cody got birthday cake ice cream. We went to what would become “our spot” and took our first picture together, Cody had a front facing camera on his phone and I thought it was the best thing in the world!!
We walked to a nearby bench to sit, I remember we laughed about how my feet couldn’t touch the ground. The sun was setting, and I felt like I was in a movie sitting there with him. My favorite part about our time at the waterfront that day was towards the end, Cody really had to use the restroom but the one at the park was closed. I remember telling him to just go in the bushes, we walked around the rest of that afternoon laughing, I had never felt so comfortable with someone! His family came back to pick us up, and we went to Chick-fil-a so he could run in and use the restroom. As he was walking back to the car I noticed a Chick-fil-a bag in his hand. My first thought was that I couldn’t believe he didn’t ask me if I wanted anything!
I love Chick-fil-a! Then he got in the car and handed me a chicken sandwich, and said he got fries for us to share. My heart melted, but I really fell for him whenever he handed me a packet of ranch dressing. I thought it was incredibly sweet that he remembered I liked ranch with my fries! Cody told me days after our date that he thought our relationship could be “something special”. If only I could tell my 14 year old self that that day at the waterfront she was looking at her future husband! Cody has been my best friend since that day, he has been with me through every high and low. He has celebrated with me during happy times, like getting into nursing school, and held me as I cried about my grandma’s that I lost way too soon. Throughout the years he has pushed me to be the very best that I can be. He always points me to Jesus, and truly loves me for who I am. I am forever thankful for that day in Walmart, it changed my life for sure!
How He Asked
The Watermelon Festival is a really big deal in our hometown. We have grown up going to the street dance, and the annual parade, and this was going to be the first year that Cody and I were going to actually be able to watch the parade together! I was so excited! Then he called me on his lunch break in the middle the week and whenever the Watermelon Festival parade came up in conversation, he said that his boss asked him to work orientation on that Saturday and he said he would because he would like the extra hours. I was so upset, and couldn’t believe he was going to work during the parade! (He knows how much I love this festival). He went on to tell me how bad he felt about it, and he seemed really sincere. I had just got done working out with my best friend, Christy, whenever he told me that so I spent the next few minutes venting about how he wasn’t coming….little did I know, she knew it was all just a cover! Cody and I go to different colleges that are two hours away from each other, and he is currently doing his summer internship, so usually we only get to see each other during the weekend. I went and cried to my mom later that day about how I was so sad we couldn’t spend that weekend together because we only see each other during the weekend, and I cherish those Saturdays!
She reassured me that everything would be okay, and that we could go shopping that weekend and hang out. I felt better, and decided to let it go. I had no idea that she knew Cody was really planning a proposal! Later that week, my two best friends in whole entire world, Emily and Christy, texted me asking if I wanted to go get my nails done. Christy said that she wanted to look good for the Watermelon festival, she was actually representing our town as Miss Hampton County Watermelon Festival, so it made complete sense that she wanted to look her best! We all agreed, and had planned to go on that Thursday. Emily texted saying she was sick, so I was sure she wasn’t coming and it would just be me and Christy, and I thought it was very strange that she came to get her nails done with us whenever she was just getting over the stomach virus! On the way back home Emily mentioned that we should spend the weekend at her river house. This wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, one of our favorite things to do is spend the weekend at the river. I was excited to hang out with my two best girls! The day of the Watermelon Festival parade came, and Cody came by my house to tell me bye before he left “to go back to Columbia”. I was so sad he was leaving, but I went on with the day and spent time with my family.
As I was getting ready to leave, my mom kept asking me what I was going to wear, commenting on my hair and makeup, and said that she “really liked that red dress I have.” Whenever I went to walk outside to get in Christy’s car, the rain was pouring down. We couldn’t find an umbrella so my Daddy walked me out to Christy’s car with a beach chair over my hair so it wouldn’t get messed up! I couldn’t help but wonder why my parents were so concerned about me going out to dinner with my friends! In the back of my mind, I thought that he could possibly be proposing, but that dream came crashing down whenever I saw he posted a snap chat story in Columbia. He had also been texting me all day, giving me details about his day, and when we spoke on the phone it even sounded like he was in his apartment in Columbia! I let the thought go, and continued on with my day. Whenever we got to the river house, Emily, Christy, and I started getting ready for dinner. Emily kept insisting she help me curl my hair, and both of them were really persistent on me wearing the red dress (I have told my mom, and a lot of my friends I always thought I’d be wearing a red dress whenever I got engaged).
Whenever we were driving to the waterfront, I felt nervous. I knew Cody was in Columbia, but something about that day just felt right. We got out the car and Emily said we should take a picture before we go eat. She started walking towards the spot that Cody and I took our very first picture, and I saw a guy standing at the end near the water. I stopped and thought that there was no way that was Cody, even though in my heart I knew it was. I looked at Christy and she smiled, and then continued to walk. I took a few more steps and stopped again, this time I was certain that it was Cody. I felt like my heart was going to explode, and the rest of the walk towards him felt like a dream. My first words whenever I saw him were “you’re supposed to be in Columbia!” I hugged him, for what felt like a really, really long time and in that moment everything in the world felt right. I knew whenever he stopped hugging me, the next time we hugged he would be my Fiance. I was trying to take it all in. He looked at me and said “you know this has been the hardest thing in the world, right, keeping this from you?” We laughed, I kept talking about how I couldn’t believe this was real, he told me he loved me, and asked me to marry him. I shook my head yes, but it took me a second to actually be able to say it out loud!
As I looked over, I saw our parents, brothers, and my two best friends laughing and crying together. It was the most beautiful moment!! Afterwards, we took the most beautiful pictures, and went and ate at the same restaurant we had our first date at, Q On The Bay. As I sat there and looked at our families together, and that beautiful ring on my finger from the man of my dreams, I couldn’t help but think of how good God is. He has blessed us with such amazing friends and family who have been nothing but supportive and encouraging! Cody and I strive to keep Jesus at the center of our relationship, we believe that all good things come from Him. I am beyond excited for this next chapter in our lives. Six years of being Cody’s girlfriend, and now I can officially say that I will be his wife!!! Thank you, Jesus!!!!
Cody told me after the proposal that he has had the ring since February! At the end of May he asked me if I wanted to go look at rings (now I know to throw me off) and I picked out this exact one and told him it was my dream ring! I had no idea he already had it! Here’s to the next chapter of our lives! I couldn’t be happier!
