McKenzie and Shane
How We Met
Shane and I were in the same journalism class my junior year of high school. He was a year younger than me and I had seen him around, but didn’t know him. Being in the same class together- especially such an interactive class where we made monthly school broadcasts and weekly news articles- we started seeing more of each other. I started liking him multiple times throughout the year, but stopped myself because he was so out of my league.
However, by March, I couldn’t help it anymore and just let myself crush on him in private, not believing it would ever go anywhere. Little did I know, he was doing the same thing. By May, we were flirting hardcore in class, and even started messaging outside of school. I started inviting him to small events- my school’s choir performance, youth group, and graduation- just so I could see him more. On May 18, 2015, as we were walking after journalism class, he said to me, “I’ll be your Mickey if you’ll be my Minnie” and I melted right there. We’ve been together since!
How He Asked
If anyone knows me at all, they’ll know how much I love Disney. One of the great things about Shane is that not only does he listen to me rant about Disney, but he actually liked the idea of saving up to go to Disneyland together! So that’s exactly what we did. After a year of saving, we headed to Disneyland for a few days of magic. On our second day, we both wore our Tangled-themed couple shirts, because Tangled is my favorite and Rapunzel and Eugene are our favorite Disney couple! We had such a great morning, but around 10:00, Shane started getting anxious about the time and wanted to go take some pictures in front of the castle.
Once we got there, he stepped away for a minute to talk to a Disney Photopass photographer, and then they led me away from the castle and over to the Fantasy Faire area, right up to Rapunzel’s tower- my favorite spot in all of Fantasyland. We took just a regular smiling picture, and then Shane turned to me, shaky but smiling. He said some of the sweetest words I had ever heard about wanting to help me escape from my own tower. Then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He had tears in his eyes and I couldn’t have been happier to say yes!
Right after that special moment, Rapunzel and Eugene came out to meet guests, and they stopped and talked to us first so we could celebrate together. It was so magical.
We also got special ears and had so many pictures taken by a really nice Photopass photographer! The rest of the trip was incredible, and I loved getting to celebrate our engagement at my happy place.
