McKenna and Jeremy
How He Asked
Our relationship has always been about experiencing new things together. We’re both 19, so we have so much of the world to see, so much of our lives left to plan. We’re just excited to do all of that exploration together!
Jeremy and I go to college together in Memphis, TN. Over winter break, he visited me in my hometown of Westerville, OH. It was his first time meeting my family and his first time experiencing a Northern winter. On the day he proposed, it snowed 5 inches. He’d never seen snow like that before, so we went on a winter walk in a local park. It was so fun, seeing him so excited about something I’ve seen every winter since I was nine.
Next, it was my turn for something new. Jeremy took me to a four-course fondue dinner at the Melting Pot, a restaurant at my favorite local mall. Driving in, I noted excitedly that the Christmas lights were still up even though it was over a week past the holiday. I adore Christmas and Jer knows it – he was happy to see me so happy. I’d never had fondue before and absolutely loved it. The time to food took to cook in the hot oil was perfect for snuggling up in the booth and talking about everything we were excited for – Jeremy getting to know my family, me eventually meeting the rest of his, the upcoming semester, and all our mutual dreams for the future. I was buzzing with happiness, his arm around me, watching the waitress flambé the chocolate fondue. I didn’t know the night could get any better.
After dinner, Jeremy and I decided to walk around the outside of the mall to get a better look at the lights. I told him about taking my freshman homecoming pictures at the mall and pointed out the shops where my friends have worked or where I’d bought my family’s Christmas presents. As we rounded the corner to the main plaza, I noticed two of my best friends standing and talking by the nearest entrance. As we approached them, I called out to them with surprise and turned to point them out to Jeremy. Before I could register what was happening, he was pulling me gently towards him, taking a knee, and reaching for his pocket. I heard cameras flashing in the background as he told me how much he loved me and how certain he was that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. It was all I could do to say “Yes!” as many times as I could before the beautiful ring he put on my finger blurred with the tears I couldn’t stop from filling my eyes… To the point where I nearly sat on a snow-covered bush behind me, mistaking it for a bench! As my best friends continued to take pictures, Jeremy picked me up and held me, and all I could think was, “I am so excited for the rest of my life!”
