Matthew and Ashley
How We Met: Matt and I met in June 2013. We worked for the same company, and it wasn’t until late September when we really started talking and realized we had everything in common. Our connection seemed so natural and so right, we decided to get together for the first time on October 12, 2013 and have not spent one day apart since then.
How He Asked: New York City has always been my home away from home, so while Matt had a couple weeks to spare between jobs, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity for us to visit for a week. We had the most amazing time, seeing mostly all of Manhattan. We had planned to visit the Empire State Building on our last night there, and as soon as we got to the 86th floor, Matt seemed a little distracted and started acting a bit weird. As we were holding each other, I asked if he was OK, and he said he was fine, so I continued to enjoy the breathtaking view. He took my hand and kept leading me to different spots on the observatory deck, and I was wondering why he was so anxious and constantly moving around. Finally, when he had found the perfect spot, he held me real close and whispered in my ear, “You know how much I love you?” And it was in that moment when my heart sank, and I knew exactly what was coming next. He continued to tell me how much he loves me and how he cannot wait to spend the rest of his life with me. It was all so beautiful and perfect, but the line that really did it for me was when he said, “I never wanted children until I met you, and I want nothing more than to have a family with you.” Then, he kneeled down and asked, “Will you marry me?” Without hesitation, I said, “Of course!” After that, we just stared at each other for what seemed like eternity (I think we both blacked out for a few moments), and then he asked, “So, it’s a ‘yes’?” And I said, “Yes!” I couldn’t stop kissing him, and then he finally put the ring on.
Once I looked up and at the group of people surrounding us, I saw that he hired a videographer to capture the whole experience on camera, because he knew how important it was for me to have that moment documented. He then led me inside where we danced to the live saxophonist who was playing that night. I was in complete shock the entire time and could only smile from ear to ear. After spending a few hours at the Empire State Building, we went back to our hotel room, and as soon as Matt opened the door to our room, I saw the most gorgeous bouquet of red roses and one pink peony – which I later found out he insisted upon with the florist, because it wasn’t the season for them, but he wanted to make sure both of my favorite flowers were incorporated in the bouquet – as well as a bottle of champagne, and a note that said, “I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you. I love you so much.” It was in that moment when it all hit me. Matt and I exchanged a few heartfelt words and just cried. It was by far the happiest and most special moment in my life thus far, and I cannot wait for many more to come!
