Matt and Brianna's Adorable Disney Proposal
How We Met
My roommate had convinced me to download Tinder, telling me it would “boost my ego” every time I got a match. I was weary about going on a date with a stranger, but I had told myself there was no harm in just talking to a few people. After a few hours of swiping, I matched with Matt. I ran out into my living room to show my roommate this cute guy with the dog I had matched with (turns out the dog in the picture was actually his sister’s). To my surprise, she had met him before. “He’s even cuter in person” she told me, “go out with him.” After a little bit of mindless small talk involving puppies and my Fergaliciousrap skills (no idea how that came up), Matt asked me on a casual Chipotle date for the next day.
It was a little awkward, but my outgoing personality kept the small talk moving. I knew he was a keeper when he paid for the guac with my burrito bowl. I’m not sure if it was the guac, the rap session in the car ride home, or the fact that his instant suggestion for a movie to watch was Tarzan… but something about him made me really excited for a second date.
Things got serious fairly fast, we spent a lot of time together and after a few weeks it was clear we were ready to get more serious about the relationship. On November 22, 2014, after about a month of dating, Matt asked me to be his girlfriend. By the end of December, he had flown to Colorado to meet my family, after which we spent 5 days in a car together driving across the country to make it back to Tuscaloosa in time for classes to start again. This was a real test of our relationship, but ultimately brought us much closer.
We spent the next few months getting to know each other’s family and friends, going on adventures, and most importantly adding a new addition to our lives (not a baby, thank God…. our puppy, George). In August 2015 the lease on the house I was living in went up, and we officially moved in together. Although this all happened pretty quickly, I knew I had found the person who I wanted to spend my life with.
How He Asked
In January 2016, we went on a trip to Walt Disney World with Matt’s parents. Both of us are big Disney fans, and I was thrilled about the trip. On the Friday of our trip, we spent the day at Magic Kingdom, and had plans to go up to the top balcony of Bay Lake Towers to watch Wishes (the fireworks show in Magic Kingdom). This view overlooks the Magic Kingdom, giving a perfect view of Cinderella’s castle and the fireworks. We got to our viewing spot about an hour early, far before anyone else, to ensure a “good spot.” I sat on the floor and started looking through social media on my cell phone to kill time, while Matt set up his tripod to get photos of the fireworks. “Can you stand up for a minute?” he asked me. I stood up, thinking he needed my help setting up his camera. He took me by the hands and starting telling me about how much he loved me, and wouldn’t want to spend his life with anyone else. I was in disbelief. So much disbelief, in fact, I actually thought he was messing with me at first. It wasn’t until he pulled the ring out of his pocket and asked me to marry him that I really believed it was happening. As soon as I said yes, his parents came out from around the corner to congratulate us. I couldn’t believe it! I was more than surprised. I cried (a lot) and after a few minutes, the balcony filled up with people to watch the fireworks. It was a beautiful end to the most amazing day! I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friend.
