Marina and Payton
How We Met
Payton and I started dating on April 22, 2010 during our sophomore year in high school. I’ll be the first to admit that he drove me insane when we met in Freshman English. He was that loud, class clown type that always copied me on vocab tests. But, by the end of our freshman year, his jokes got a little funnier and he seemed less annoying, so our friendship began. We grew closer, calling ourselves “best friends”, though everyone else knew there was something more. He showed up to my softball games, I went to his baseball games, and before I knew it I was having a boy over to meet my family on Christmas. He talked and laughed with my crazy, obnoxious family for hours, and won their hearts before I realized he had mine.
On April 22, we finally admitted our relationship, not that it was much of a surprise to anyone. From that day on, we have been inseparable. We are not one of those lovey-dovey, PDA type of couples; but, more of the best-friend-call-each-other-“dude” type. When it came time to go to college we followed our best opportunities for our sports and educations, and found ourselves in separate states. Though the long distance thing was working just fine, he was not happy at his school, so he decided to transfer to mine, Washburn. It was almost as if it was meant to be, because the baseball team needed a player like him. We are now in our senior year, competing in our final seasons and getting ready to graduate in May. Our relationship has continued to grow stronger everyday, and I wouldn’t have wanted to share the last 6 years of my life with anyone else.
How He Asked
On December 15, 2015, Payton took me to Steamboat Springs in Colorado for a ski trip for my birthday.
We went to the top of the mountain to eat lunch and “take pictures”, and before I knew it, my best friend was down on one knee with the most beautiful ring I’d ever seen.
I gasped, cried, laughed, and finally squeaked out the “yes”, to complete the most perfect proposal any girl could have asked for.
