Engagement Proposal Ideas in Hoboken, NJ

How We Met

I moved to NYC from Miami, FL in January of 2015 for a new job in the fashion industry. I was thrilled to be in the city I loved, feeling excited and adventurous, and open to meeting new people. I decided to join a dating app in March, and in the first week of joining, Chris and I matched. Before we exchanged phone numbers, we had made plans to meet, until all of a sudden, I didn’t hear from him for a few days. I thought “OK, on to the next!” Well, it turns out he had a technical glitch on his app, and called the Customer Service/IT dept. to get it fixed. He was finally able to get on the app again, and messaged me. He thoroughly apologized for not answering my messages, and said he tried to get it fixed so that he could get my phone number- he had even taken a screenshot of the error message so that I’d believe his story! It looked legitimate, so I kept talking to him.

We met for drinks & dinner in the city after work a few days later. He came in, and since my birthday had recently passed, he surprised me with something every girl loves: cupcakes. I knew I would like him. We immediately connected! We started going on dates, he showed me around Hoboken (where he lived), and we found a Cuban restaurant that soon became “our spot”. Being from Miami, this restaurant reminded me of home. We grew closer, as we had the same taste in food, music, and the desire to try new things and travel the world.

A few weeks later, he told me his friends were getting married in Italy. Before he could even ask me to be his plus-one, I said I would love to go too! He was shocked that I’d be willing to go with him- we’d only known each other about a month or two. Some of my friends and family thought I was crazy, and others thought “What better way to really get to know someone?” We spent two weeks in Rome and Florence, strolling though beautiful historic sites, devouring pizza, pasta, and wine, and dancing all night in an epic castle at his friend’s wedding. To this day, it’s still one of the best trips we’ve taken together.

How He Asked

I eventually moved into his apartment in Hoboken. After living in Hoboken for a year, we decided to move to a new apartment in Secaucus, NJ. A few months after moving in, on November 4th, 2017, he told me he wanted to spend the afternoon at “our old stomping grounds”. We would walk the Hoboken pier, get lunch, and go see a movie. I didn’t think anything of it, since we used to go to the pier all the time. We would walk by the water, look at the NYC skyline, and sometimes even motivate each other to go running on the pier together. On this day, we walked to the pier, he got down on his knee and proposed. I was completely surprised, and he actually hired a photographer to capture it all! There were even a few people at the park who cheered and clapped for us- it was crazy!

We then walked over to our favorite Cuban restaurant, where he had made reservations, and had another surprise for me. We walked in, and our families came out from the back. My mom, brother, and sister-in-law had actually flown up from South FL to be there! I was overjoyed and in complete shock, just trying to process it all. We celebrated with mojitos and empanadas- it was amazing! He even told me he had spoken to my Dad in Venezuela over the phone, a month prior, to get his approval. That meant the world to me. I couldn’t be happier!

The next morning, I was cleaning our apartment and went to take the trash out. We have a trash chute in our building, and as I threw the bag, my ring (which was too big) slid off my finger and clinked down the trash chute! Chris and I looked at each other stunned, then ran down to the trash room. He spoke to the doorman and had to make several phone calls to find the person who could stop the trash compactor. Meanwhile, I’m in the trash room, throwing bags around and desperately praying I would find my ring. About 45 minutes later, one of the building managers came to stop and separate the trash compactor. We looked through rotten food, dirty diapers, and other garbage to find the ring. Luckily, we found it! The worst day of my life soon turned into the best day ever.

That week, we got my ring sized, polished, and disinfected. I still can’t believe any of this happened, but I’m thrilled it did. I can’t wait to marry my best friend, and I’m SO happy I swiped right!!
