Maria and Ryan
How We Met
We had met about five years before he proposed. We started dating quickly after we met and he asked me to be his girlfriend at a Foreigner concert. For the next five years, we had dated on and off. Shortly before my grandmother suddenly passed away, we had started talking again and had plans to hang out.
Even though we weren’t together, he supported me by coming to my grandmother’s wake and funeral. The next few months were really hard on me and he was always there for me whether I just needed someone to talk to or someone to hold me as tears flowed from my eyes.
How He Asked
Ryan and I went to Florida for 6 days primarily to go to Wrestlemania, but we also spent a lot of time in Disney. He kept stressing that he wanted this vacation to be the best vacation we’ve ever been on and how special our dinner would be on Friday evening at the Yachtsman Steakhouse at Disney’s Yacht Club. I knew something was up! A few days before we left, he told me that he had gotten a black car service to take us to the airport from my house. I thought it was really unnecessary since my mom was going to drive us there on her way to work. The morning we left, my parents and I went to the diner for breakfast. We NEVER go out for breakfast. Ever. So I knew something was going on. As we were leaving the diner, he said he was on his way to my house. I made sure to have all of my bags ready for when he got there so we could just head to the airport. Well, he showed up in a stretch Cadillac Escalade limo that could probably fit at least a dozen people!
When he walked into my house, all he said was, “I got a limo…” and then went into his little speech that he had prepared in Italian. I’m Italian and my family speaks it (although I should probably be able to speak it better than I do).
Of course I said yes! I later learned he wanted to propose while we were away, but was too afraid that the ring would be caught when we went through security at the airport! We celebrated with champagne (at 8 A.M.) with my parents, aunt, cousin, and best friend before making a quick stop to see my uncle and then headed to the airport. We were able to celebrate with just the two of us the entire time. One of my best friends lives near Disney and we were also able to celebrate with her and her boyfriend. When we checked into Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside, we received Happily Ever After pins we always wore in the park. We received best wishes from many strangers and some nice things from Disney cast members, including free dessert, slushies (very helpful when we needed to cool down!), and some extra fast passes.
