Maria and Michael

How We Met

Michael and I met when we were both 17 at our jobs at Hollister. We were dating other people at the time, so we just became really close friends for about a year. Boyfriends and girlfriends came and went. We met up one day at our nearby college and that’s we realized that we both loved each other, and started dating October 15, 2011. In 2014, we both went away for college; he went to UCF and I went to FAU. We both graduated on 2017 and got jobs. But again, he went to work in Tampa as a mechanical engineer and I Stayed in WPB to work as a teacher.

How He Asked

Fast forward 6 years and here we are taking a trip to Washington DC to totally geek out together. The first night we get there we were going to meet up with his aunt, cousin and her husband to go eat. (Mind you the whole day we were traveling, he did not eat or say a word to me). We finally meet up with them and make our way to the Lincoln Memorial after we ate some tacos. We get to the memorial and we’re reading the Gettysburg address. I try making some small talk with Michael and he was not having it at all. Totally ignored me. I was so upset so I walked away. He then asks me to take a picture in front of Abe and I say ok. Then he asks to see the picture and retake it. In my mind, I’m like ‘why does he want to see the pictures?

He is never the one to want to look at the pictures…weird’. He says he doesn’t like them so then we take one with the Washington Memorial behind us. We go thru the same process again and after 3 retakes, he says ‘ok this is good, let’s do one with flash’. At this point, I am so annoyed so I say ok fine just to make him happy. His cousin then says to me “wait let me fix your hair”. She fixes it then turns me around and he’s down on one knee. I scream out “no!” only because I was SO shocked I couldn’t believe it.
