Maria and David
How We Met: David and I met in high school through mutual friends in 2008. I still would like to think that it was love at first sight. I had planned on going to our mutual friend’s house that following saturday night just to hang out with some friends. However, the week before the get together I had found out that this David kid was going to be there, and all of a sudden I found myself paying more attention to him during our lunch period.
I would sit at my lunch table and just watch him laugh with his friends. I couldn’t get over how beautiful his smile was. I suddenly realized how handsome and how interested in him I actually was. The weekend finally came and I was able to spend more time with David at our friend’s house. He had no clue that I liked him, but I felt like I was being drawn to him all evening; I just wanted to be next to him.
David and I didn’t get much time to talk that evening, but we both quickly realized how interested we were in each other. After that night, David and I became good friends for several months before we started officially dating in 2008. David is a year older than me, so after his senior year of high school he headed to college where I shortly followed behind.
To this day, we both survived 5 years of undergrad and 1 year of graduate school together. Some say that high school couples won’t last once they part ways for college, but David and I only seemed to grow stronger. Fast forward to almost 7 years later and our relationship is still growing stronger and stronger everyday.
How He Asked: Anyone who knows me knows how much I love photography and flowers, especially sunflowers. David and I didn’t have any summer plans this year, which was a first, so I suggested visiting a sunflower field so I could take some pictures with my Nikon DSLR. Seeing a sunflower field was always on my bucket list so I started researching online for weeks.
I finally found a place 3.5 hours from our hometown in Pennsylvania called Mckee Beshers in Poolesville, Maryland. David agreed that it would be a fun day trip to make so we researched the best time to go and marked it on our calendars. Peek week for the sunflowers in Maryland was the first two weeks in July, so on David’s day off (Friday, July 10th) we packed up his car with my photography equipment and some sandwiches and headed to Maryland.
After almost 4 hours, David and I finally arrived at the sunflower field. I quickly got my photography equipment out of the trunk and made a dash for the flowers. I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. We took a photo or two and then David suggested we set the camera up in another section of the sunflowers.
I repositioned my tripod and made sure the camera was ready and then hopped over beside David so he could snap our picture. Just then David turned to me, took my hand, dropped to one knee and asked if I would marry him.
I replied with an ecstatic, “Of course I’ll marry you!” Luckily, David continued to snap pictures with my wireless remote as he proposed which led to the most perfect pictures I could have ever asked for.
It was truly a dream come true.
