Proposal Story: Manisha and Mehul

I met Mehul in New York City in May 2009.  One evening my sister, Sona, asked me to accompany her on a night out where she planned on meeting a guy she had met recently (and her boyfriend today), Deepak Dave.  As I came along to be “wingwoman” for Sona,  Deepak brought along two of his friends, one of them being Mehul.  Sona and Deepak were pretty much in their own world from the beginning of the night and left Mehul and I on our own.  So we struck up conversation and we realized very quickly that we had a lot in common.  We laughed and danced the night away and I remember thinking at the end of the evening what an amazing fun-filled time I had with Mehul. Over the course of that summer, we got to know each other better.  Until then I never knew anyone that I could spend hours on end just talking to about anything and everything.  Having him in my life made me happier than I had ever known.  As our friendship grew into a loving relationship I realized that he was the one.  He was charming, caring and incredibly funny, he was everything I ever wanted. About a year after we started dating we planned a trip to Rome, a city neither of us had visited but both of us dreamed of going one day.  Little did I know what was destined to happen on our trip.

In January 2011 Mehul and I left for our trip to Italy which included stops in Rome, Venice, Florence and Siena.  Mehul was especially excited about seeing the Colosseum in Rome.  For as long as I had known him, he talked about how incredible it would be to visit this spectacular monument someday.  We planned our visit to the Colosseum on our second day in Rome, right before sunset.  It was awe-inspiring to see the historic site with my own eyes for the first time.  We toured the inside of the structure for awhile and then Mehul mentioned that he had read of a spot outside which overlooked the arena.  From there, the sunset spilling on the walls of the Colosseum was supposed to be breathtaking.  We slowly made our way to this area outside and it was true, at sunset the walls of the Colosseum turn to a gorgeous golden hue. For a few moments we just looked at this beautiful site in silence and I felt a complete sense of peace and happiness.  Just when I thought the experience could not get any more special, Mehul turns to me, tells me how much he loves me and that he would like me to be his ” PIC” (partner in crime) for the rest of his life.  Then he got down on one knee as he pulled out a box from his pocket, opened the box and asked me if I would marry him!! The feelings rushing through me at that moment were unlike anything I had ever known.

Even now as I write this I have goose bumps as a recall the enormity of those few minutes.  It felt like an out of body experience, as if I was watching myself as this was all going on.  After sayimg “this can’t be happening” about 10 times, I dropped to my knees and I said to Mehul, “of course I will marry you.”  As he slides the ring onto my finger (which was absolutely stunning by the way) he tells me that there is a photographer a few feet from us who took pictures of it all.  I could not believe it! How could he have possibly planned this whole incredible proposal in such a magnificent setting so far away from home, find a professional photographer to capture it without me having a clue! It still amazes me today!

A few minutes after it all happened and both of us got our bearings back, our photographer, Rochelle Cheever, came up to us and introduced herself.  She had with her a bottle of prosecco which Mehul had asked her to bring.  Right there, in front of the Colosseum we popped the bottle and toasted to our engagement.  We still look back at the amazing photos Rochelle took, it’s so very special to me that we have these pictures to take us back to those incredible moments and to share with our kids one day.
