Maggie and Alex
How We Met
Alex and I met at the beginning of our Senior year in college. He worked at our campus coffee shop the year before, and I was a new barista. After a couple of weeks, one of my managers asked me if I would like to pick up another weekly shift. I said yes, and Alex was one of the other baristas that worked at the time. We became friends instantly. After a while, the hours I spent behind the coffee bar with him became my favorite part of the week. I would leave work and my cheeks would hurt from laughing so much. Things with Alex were always so easy. After a year of working together and becoming one of my best friends, Alex finally asked me out on our first date!
How He Asked
After we graduated, Alex took a sales job in Indianapolis, and I took a teaching job in Chicago. We decided that our relationship was worth the distance and took turns driving to see one another every weekend. One weekend, Alex was visiting me in Chicago and he told me that he won a gift card in a raffle at work. He frequently got little incentives for hitting his sales goals, so this did not strike me as strange. He told me that we would be going to the Signature Room, a restaurant on the 95th floor of the John Hancock building.
I was instantly excited to have the chance to dress up! We got ready and headed out the door. We pulled up to the Hancock building and to be honest, I was freaking out a little bit. Not because I was anticipating anything special, but because we were running late. I was nervous that we would not make it on time for our reservation, so after we parked the car, I made Alex literally run with me to the elevator. Once we got there and I realized that we would only be a couple minutes late, I began to relax.
We took the elevator up to the restaurant, and as we stepped out I was absolutely floored by the view. We were taken to our table, and from one direction we saw the entire city light up as dusk began to hit, and from the other we saw the sun setting over Lake Michigan. I could not get over how spectacular the view was and how special I felt that Alex would choose to take me to a place like this. As I looked across the table, I was overwhelmed by how much I loved this man.
Alex excused himself to go to the restroom, and when he came back he walked up to me instead of going to his seat. That’s when he pulled out the ring and got down on one knee. He told me a bunch of wonderful things that I don’t remember at all. I was too busy crying and nodding my head up and down to remember much, but when he finished I had a ring on my hand, all of the people around us were clapping and cheering loudly, and I had a new forever.
After he proposed, and I composed myself, I decided that I couldn’t sit through a fancy dinner. We got our food to go and walked down the street a little bit to get chocolate shakes instead. We sat there and talked about how perfect the night was and how excited we were for the future. We spent some time soaking in the evening and people watching, and then we got in the car and drove home. As I opened up the front door I was shocked to see all of my family and friends waiting to surprise us with a party. Alex’s parent even drove in from Michigan! It was such a special time of celebration that he so carefully planned. It was the perfect ending to the perfect night.
I am so so so blessed to have Alex in my life. He is the most hard-working, selfless, and kind person I have ever met. I have been praying for the man that would one day be my husband ever since I was a little girl, and he is so much better than anyone I would have been able to think of, even in my wildest of dreams. He pushes me to be a better person, and he chooses to love me when its not easy. I am so excited to go through the ups and downs of life with him by my side. He is my favorite forever.
