Madison and Travis

How We Met

The first time I met Travis was freshman year in our math class but we didn’t start to hang out with each other until the summer before our senior year of high school. At the very start of summer, we both ended up at the same house for a bonfire because we had a lot of mutual friends. We started talking and getting to know each other better, although at the time I wasn’t really interested in dating him but thankfully that did not stop him!

Travis asked me out on a date and like most high school first dates, we went out to get ice cream; from then on we spent the majority of the summer together going on amazing adventures. As the beginning of the school year approached, Travis asked me to be his girlfriend on August 21, 2013 and we have been happily together ever since. A lot has changed over the years– we both graduated high school together and while I went on to college at Bowling Green State University, Travis decided to enlist in the United States Army. After two and a half years of being in a long distance relationship, we are stronger than ever as a couple and I can’t wait to be married to him!

How He Asked

On Christmas Eve, we were on our way to Travis’ house from church when he turned into an empty patch of land just a minute from his house. I knew the place well because this was where we always used to go to spend some time alone since it was right between his house and mine. This place became known to us as “our spot” because we would go and sit under the stars there, this was where Travis first told me that he loved me, we celebrated our one year anniversary there by lighting floating lanterns and that is where we spent our last night together before Travis went to Basic Training for the Army. Confused as to why we stopped at “our spot”, I started to ask questions and he simply got out of the car and said “Follow me, let’s go on a walk”. A little reluctant since it was cold, I told him that we can come back later and we should just head to his house now. After I realized he wasn’t giving in, I got out of the car and he took my hand as we walked into a small forest a few feet away. Attempting to avoid all the branches, I was focusing on my feet as we went farther into the forest when he slowed down and said “Look up at the tree”. As I looked up, I saw a large tree and in the center “Will you marry me” was carved into the bark.

Stunned from reading the message on the tree, I hadn’t realized that Travis let go of my hand and went down on his knee holding a small silver ring box.

When I turned my attention back to him, he asked “Will you marry me?” with a smile that filled his entire face and I immediately said “YES!” He placed a beautiful ring on my finger and we embraced each other in a tight hug.

To make this moment even more special, Travis knew that carving our initials into a tree together was high on my bucket list so he handed me a hammer and edge and we carved our initials under his previous carvings. Once we were all done, we went on our way to his house where we had a big celebration with both of our families.
