Madison and Seth
How We Met: We met through a mutual friend on a blind date! My RA on my hall in my dormitory set us up. I was a freshman at Gardner-Webb, and he was junior at Western Carolina. We got coffee on my university’s campus, and we ended up talking until 1:00 AM. I knew from that first date that he was the one for me. We continued to hang out on the weekends – either he would drive to my campus or I would drive to his. When I visited Western for the first time, we discovered we had a common love of hiking. We set off on a day hike on a trail called Cullowhee Falls, which is famous among Western Carolina students for it’s beautiful waterfalls. When we reached the first waterfall, we found our way across the stream and sat on a huge rock in the middle of stream overlooking one of the waterfalls. It was there that he asked me to be his girlfriend!
How He Asked: My birthday was April 3rd, and he told me had a big surprise day planned for me the following Saturday. I knew that we had tickets for us to visit the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, but I had no idea what he had planned for the rest of the afternoon and evening. We enjoyed a morning on the estate, followed by a relaxing lunch in the River Arts District of Asheville. After leaving lunch, we headed back out on the highway. I noticed that we were heading towards Cullowhee, NC, where he attended college and we spent countless weekends with each other and where we ultimately fell in love. We had not been back to visit campus since he graduated almost a year earlier. I was so excited at the idea of returning to Cullowhee, and before I knew it we were back at Western Carolina. We spend the afternoon walking around campus and reminiscing over the previous two years. Seth then asked if I was up for an adventure, and of course I told him yes! He drove us to Cullowhee Falls, our favorite hiking trail just a few miles from campus. He brought his camera along, and we enjoyed taking pictures along the trail. We made our way to the first waterfall and I started to cross the stream to sit on one of the rocks nestled in the water. Seth had asked me to be his girlfriend at this exact spot, and he had told me to sit on “our rock” where we officially began dating. We sat on the rock and continued to reminisce over how God had worked in our lives the past two and a half years. I thought about whether he would ask me to marry him at this point, but I quickly stopped thinking about it so I wouldn’t get my hopes up. Sitting in the middle of the stream, he turned to me and said “What are you thinking about?” to which I replied that I was just happy to be there with him! I asked him what he was thinking about in return, and he stated that he had a question to ask me. Before I knew it, he was down on one knee, and my vision blurred and heart stopped. I don’t remember seeing the ring or hearing the sweet words he said, but I remember the tears flowing from his eyes.
