Madison and Sam
How We Met
Fancy Party 2012- where it all began. Sam and I were seniors in high school and had known each other through the years from class to class and being involved in Young Life, it wasn’t until our senior year when we really started to notice one another. Two friends from another nearby high school were hosting what they liked to call a “Fancy Party” basically an excuse besides homecoming or prom to dress up and well… BE FANCY! So, that night, December 2012, a group of friends and I decided to go to this rival high schools get-together. I knew we would know a handful of people there, so we felt quite comfortable. That night, Sam was one of those people. You may think I am about to say, it was love at first sight, we talked the night away… but not exactly.
Rather, it was not until the end of the night when there was a mistletoe, YES A MISTLETOE! **spoiler alert** he did not kiss me underneath the mistletoe, but someone else almost did! This large boy, whom I had no idea who he was. I ran outside of the party giggling with my friends over what had just happened, Sam witnessed the whole thing. Later that night, he texted me. He said “I sat next to that guy who tried to kiss you under the mistletoe on my way home” the conversation went on and and on and on… in a very high-school, texting-relationship fashion. It would continue through the days by one of us saying something along the lines of “whoops, I fell asleep” early in the morning, so that the conversation would trail into the next day.
This went on for about a month and then Sam and I finally went on our first date. It took a lot of prompting, and some really putting myself out there on my end- but he went for it. So, that 2013 New Year began with some excitement! I had a new boyfriend, Sam Thompson. Some may have thought I was crazy, I was starting to date someone the second semester of my senior year, we were both looking at completely different colleges and frankly, we were just complete opposites. But, look who showed them!

How He Asked
For months now I have been trying to prod out of my friends “when is he going to ask?!” I had a timeframe in mind, sometime before Christmas 2016. Never in a million years would I have guessed, Sunday, November 20th, 2016.
You see, Sam and I are both volunteer Young Life leaders. We had just wrapped up on of our marathon weekends leading high school students, when my dear friend and roommate, Carly, dropped us all off. After letting the last girl out of the car, she hands me a note.
The note read…
Hey! So I hate to break it to you, but today isn’t going to go anything like you planned it to go. So sit back and enjoy the ride! I’ll see you later… Love, S.T.”
I was in shock. WHAT! I had planned to go home, eat, sleep, shower and lay on the couch all day, WHAT WAS HAPPENING?!
I was astonished and excited, I had my breath taken away. I simply was going to follow Carly’s lead.
I asked her where we were going and she said said, “well, right now we are going to go to Zest” my absolute FAVORITE juice bar. Sam is good, real good.
So Car and I enjoyed some smoothies over awkward giggles, because neither of us could even muster up the courage to say what was happening. I didn’t want to be wrong! and Carly didn’t want to give it away!
After light-lunch, Car and I went to get our nails done. We had plans to go at 5pm that day (total coincidence!) but she had moved our appointments up. At this point, I was certain. Wow! I am getting engaged today.
After a peaceful, relaxing time getting our nails done, I looked at Carly and asked “Am I going to get to change?!” She said yes, don’t worry you will have about an hour. That was music to my ears, Sam knows how much I hate being rushed when getting ready.
So, I went back to my apartment, showered, put on my favorite sweater from my bestie, straightened my hair and I was ready to go see my man.
As I walked downstairs, I assumed Carly would just be driving me somewhere once again, boy was I wrong! I walked outside and two of my best friends were awaiting me! I was not expecting them to be home, so you can imagine the utter squeaks that shrieked out of my mouth. I jumped up and down with them in excitement as we had talked about this day for years.
When I got into the car, I asked “where are we going?!” they simply stated… “you’ll see” They had handed me a stack of letters from friends and family all filled with love and well wishes. Sam knows how much of a “words” girl I am, they just get me every time. I could hardly focus on the letters, so then I started reading them all out loud. About 40 minutes later, I looked up and I knew just where we were, out in the country near my families farm. There is nothing else really around it, so I was pretty sure that was exactly where we were going!
My friend who was driving asked, “Do you know where we are?” I said yes, confidently. She said “great, want to tell me when to turn?” We laughed over the fact that I was directing myself to my own engagement. As we drove back into the field, Sam was waiting there for me. I was so excited to jump into his arms as we finally came to a halt. He was equally excited.
He took my hand and walked me down a path and out into the middle of a field. He explained how his love for me had grown as we had gotten to know each other, how our relationship pushes him in his faith and encourages him to be a better man. I was swooning.
Before I knew it, he was down on one knee and I was yelling “YES!” My best friend and stellar photographer was capturing the moment, so after embracing Sam. I quickly leapt to my best friend, Maggie. As that was a surprise as well!
I danced around with joy with my three best friends: Maggie, Holly and Chloe and we beamed with joy as a moment we had always dreamt of was finally coming true!
I don’t think this moment will ever get old for me.
After chilling in the wind, we got back in the car and I quickly called my mom, dad and two brothers. I was squealing the whole time, so it was no doubt that anyone I talked to could hear my excitement. We drove back to Sam’s house where an engagement party was awaiting us! We celebrate for hours with friends and family and talked the night away. From then on, it was no longer a dream, it was becoming a reality. A soon-to-be Mrs. Thompson.
