Madison and Emery
How We Met
Emery and I were high school sweethearts in its purest form. This is the story of how we met.
In 11th grade I sat next to Emery’s friend Josh in Physics class. We goofed off occasionally in class, but I didn’t really know Josh or his friend group. On 90s day during Homecoming week in October, I accidentally left my agenda underneath my desk after class and Josh picked it up. Josh, being the goofball he is, kept it and found my locker combination that I had stupidly written on the first page. He brought my agenda to Emery with a maniacal plan for their Senior prank- between classes they would hack into my locker and lock a huge boombox in it with their own padlock playing their anthem- the 90s song “It’s Tricky” by Run-DMC- on repeat until someone could cut the padlock off the locker. Between class periods, they grabbed the boombox from his car and made their way to my locker. Their plan was foiled when they saw me at my locker. “We can’t do this,” Emery told Josh “she looks too nice.” Then and now, Emery pretends to have a hard shell, but he’s a softie at heart. He prevented Josh from putting the boombox in my locker for fear that he’d get me in trouble.
A few weeks later, my friend Danielle was coincidentally asked out by Emery’s friend Tyler. They were going on a golf cart ride around town (my hometown of Peachtree City, Georgia is one of the only cities in the world where you can drive golf carts like cars everywhere) and Danielle wanted me to come along with them to ease the awkwardness that is a first date in high school.
Jokingly, I told her to tell Tyler to bring a hot friend. Luckily for me, he actually did and Emery showed up with him on the golf cart. We had a blast riding around town all afternoon. That night we were in Emery’s driveway and Josh rode by on his golf cart, saw me, and exclaimed to Emery “Hey, that’s the girl we were going to prank!” Emery was so embarrassed. It was hilarious. And so began an awesome group of friends that we still keep in touch with today. A few weeks later, Emery nervously asked me out on our first date and the rest is history!
How He Asked
Nearly six (yes, SIX!) years later…
We both graduated college from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia and commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army through Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. While training to be an Army Officer and going through college simultaneously could be incredibly challenging at times, we supported each other through it all.
I graduated as the Valedictorian for Georgia Southern University’s Class of 2018 and he graduated at the top of his Construction Engineering program. We both ranked among the top graduating Cadets nationally. It was an incredible honor and I was so grateful to have him by my side. We both achieved our goal of assessing into Active Duty Aviation, an extremely competitive field to enter in the Army. To celebrate our graduation his wonderful parents took us to New York City as a last-hoorah vacation before we report to Fort Rucker, Alabama in June for flight school!
We toured all over New York City, making it a point to visit all of our nation’s symbolic sites. The 9/11 memorial was especially moving for us both. What happened that fateful day is what led us both to serve. Of course, we visited the Freedom Tower, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Broadway, Times Square, and Rockefeller Center as well.
On our last day in the city Emery seemed tense, nervous even. The day went on pleasantly and that afternoon, his parents suggested we take a trip to the top of the Empire State Building. On the long elevator ride up, it occurred to me that this could be the day he asks. After all, we were about to move in together and start our new lives in the Army. Overlooking the famous New York skyline- with the Statue of Liberty and the Freedom tower rising high- he broke into nervous laughter.
“What’s up?” I asked. “This is a lot harder than I thought it would be” he laughed. I knew exactly what he meant. Sure enough, he then told me he loved me more than anything in the world, got down on one knee and asked “Madison, will you marry me?” Already tearing up and laughing myself, I said:”Yes, of course!” His proposal was absolutely perfect. He is absolutely perfect!
