Madeline and Steven
How We Met
Steven and I met on Myspace in late December of 2006, when I was 15 and he was 16! I know it’s so silly, but luckily we had a mutual friend in real life so I knew he was real. He lived over 100 miles away, so for two months we talked on phone non-stop before arranging to finally meet. By that point, we had talked everyday about absolutely everything, and I truly felt he knew me better than anyone. So, 12 days before we met, I told him I was in love with him and he said it back. I still tease him since I had to say it first, even though he was hinting at it. We finally met on February 23rd, 2007, and made our relationship official. After four years of a bit of distance between us, we moved in together and have been loving living together ever since.
How He Asked
While planning our trip to Japan to visit my friend N’tima and her family, N’tima messaged me to ask if it was ok if she shot some photos of us while we were there for her portfolio. I said yes of course, who doesn’t want high-quality vacation photos? We arranged to go to Shiraito Falls, an amazing waterfall under Mount Fuji. We made the drive out to the falls, and took our time wandering down the pathway to the base of the falls. It was the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.
We find a good spot and N’tima starts taking photos of us. After a few shots and poses, Steven brings me in for a hug and says “You know that story you always tell about how you said I love you first? Well, I think you need a new story.” I quickly realize whats happening and he gets down on one knee while I start happy sobbing.
This part is a blur, but the question was asked and I said yes. We stood there crying and holding each other for a few minutes before I remembered that N’tima was just a few steps away snapping photos of the whole thing.
I looked over and she was crying right along with us. Turns out, Steven had asked her to set up the photoshoot and they planned the whole thing together. After lots of hugs and more tears, we got in the car and drove over to a nearby lake for more photos.
Once the sun set, we left and celebrated with lots of curry and bread. It was the most perfect day of our almost 10 year relationship, and I couldn’t have dreamed a better proposal. I am so lucky I get to marry this thoughtful and amazing man.
