Madeline and Adam
How We Met
We’ve known each other our whole lives. Our moms were best friends in high school and maintain a close friendship to this day. I grew up in Colorado, and Adam grew up in New York, but since our parents were such good friends, we would visit each other back and forth over the years. We developed a long-distance friendship and became best friend as we got older.
One day, during my senior year of high school, Adam called and asked me to prom. Before I knew it, I was in New York dancing the night away with my best friend, and I realized my feelings for him were much more than friendship. As it turns out, he felt the same way.
We went our separate ways for college (I was in Iowa; he was in upstate New York), but the feelings remained. Finally, during our second years of college, we decided our feelings could withstand the distance and we officially started dating on October 13, 2014. The distance wasn’t all bad – we got to travel the world together (he even visited me when I studied abroad in Italy!), and it was all worth it when we graduated from college in 2017 and moved out to California, finally closing the gap and living in the same time zone for the first time.
How He Asked
When we were five years old, our parents took us to a park in San Francisco and took a photo of us on a bench together. Ever since we started dating, we’d talked about recreating the photo in the same spot, but no one could remember exactly where it was taken.
Over the weekend of our 4th anniversary, we decided to visit my cousins who live in San Francisco. After hours of roaming Google Street View, and with the help of our photographer Madeline, Adam was able to find the exact spot where the photo was taken. The evening of our anniversary, Adam took me back to that spot to recreate the photo. However, just before we were going to ask someone to take the photo for us, he got down on one knee and asked me to spend forever with him. I said yes!
I thought the surprises were over and that we were going to dinner to celebrate together. Little did I know, our parents had flown in from New York and Colorado to surprise me at the restaurant.
And so, the two moms who became best friends in high school got to celebrate their kids getting engaged over 30 years later. Life with Adam has been a dream, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.
