Maddy and Andrew
How We Met
Andrew and I met in kindergarten. Though it wasn’t love at first sight, Andrew told me he started crushing on me in the first grade. I liked him all through middle and high school, but I didn’t think he was interested in me. Come to find out, he wasn’t allowed to date until he was seventeen. We started dating our junior year of high school, and the rest is history!
How He Asked
On May 26, 2017, I (Maddy) spent most of the day doing hair and makeup for a beautiful wedding. Once I got home, I quickly changed into a dress to go to the graduation ceremony for the high school I graduated from a few years ago. My mom, my best friend Christine, and I had planned on meeting Andrew for dinner before graduation. Having not eaten since early that morning, I was beyond excited for eating at my favorite Mexican restaurant, and honestly, it was the only thing on my mind. Christine insisted that I’d ride with her to dinner and that we would follow my mom. On the way to the restaurant, Christine claimed that she saw an eagle and promptly turned off of the road to dinner, much to my stomach’s dismay.
We began driving towards the lake, and I started thinking about how Andrew and I had our first date on the dock at the end of the road we were on. We reached the parking lot, Christine parked, I saw Andrew’s car, and everything gets a little blurry for me from there. I looked down at the dock where we had our first date, and my handsome man was standing down there, playing his violin perfectly without missing a note.
He had roses everywhere and a journal we had been writing back and forth to one another since we started dating. I think I stammered a few words, like “what is, is this, are you, oh goodness.” I walked down to the dock, Andrew said something very sweet, I’m sure, but I don’t remember it at all because I was still trying to determine if I was dreaming.
He got down on one knee, and I said yes! …Then I kept asking where my mom was. Come to find out, all the while, my momma was at La Hacienda, worried that Christine and I had gotten into a wreck. She finally called Andrew to see if he knew where we were, and he told her the news! She was just as shocked as I was. You see, Momma isn’t the best secret-keeper, so when Andrew asked Daddy for permission, he also asked that my dad would not tell my mom! Oh, and did I mention it was my birthday? What a day!
