How He Asked

I live in Toronto while Richard lives in New York. We have been in a long distance relationship for mang years at the time and have had some serious conversations about getting married.

I have told him the type of diamond cut I like by looking online. And we only actually visited one jewellery store just so I can get my ring finger size. So I knew that a proposal was in the works.

On our seventh year together, we decided to go on a Caribbean cruise. We flew to Puerto Rico where the cruise ship will be embarking from a couple of days in advance to go sight seeing in Old San Juan. I had a “feeling” that he will be proposing to me during the formal dinner at the cruise so I was pretty stressfree while sight-seeing in Puerto Rico.

Later in the day we flew in, we went back to the hotel to freshen up. As I was getting ready wearing a pair of sneakers, a plain shirt and shorts, Richard asked me if that that was what I was wearing to go out. I said yes and he just looked at me. He then went on to tell me how Old San Juan is such a beautiful place to have our pictures taken in and that it would not be suitable if I don’t make an effort to dress more appropriately.

And so I changed into something else and we went out. We checked out San Cristobal fort and coincidentally there was a couple who were having their post-nup pictorials there. I gave Richard a nudge and told him how nice it would have been to have a pictorial in a place like that. Little did I know I’d be having my own engagement pictorial a few minutes later. Haha!

After San Cristobal, Richard asked if I wanted to check out the fort of El Morro even if it was already closed. It was past 5pm at the time so I found it odd of him to even want to go there. Anyway I didn’t question him and decided to go just for the heck of it.

When we got there Richard kept pointing to me the spots he wanted to check out and to take pictures of. Finally he settled on a spot away from most of the tourists but with great view. He took photos of me and I obliged willingly. A couple of tourists even offered to take a photo for us!

I asked Richard to take a jumping photo of me and he obliged. At that time I was carrying my purse and a souvenir bag so Richard told me to give him my stuff so he can place it on the ground and it won’t have to be in the photos. I agreed, gave him my stuff, and started getting ready to have my photo taken.

As Richard placed my belongings on the grass, so did he place the camera as well. And that’s when it hit me. I started tearing up and crying. He kissed me on the forehead and went down on one knee. He told me that he had already asked my parents for their blessing. He took out the ring box from his pocket, opened it, and asked me to marry him. I was surprised, emotional, ecstatic, and giddy all at the same time. Richard even got me the ring that I’ve always wanted. In between sniffles, I managed to say “Of course!”.

After that, Richard went to introduce me to the photographer he hired to take photos of his proposal and our engagement. This took me by surprise because I never expected him to take this much effort in planning his proposal. So we had our own photoshoot in the beautiful Puerto Rico after all.

I also looked at our photos from our camera and made a realization. Richard had the ring box in the right pocket of his pants all along and I was just so oblivious. I realized that that’s why he kept placing me to his left whever we asked other tourists to have our photos taken.. So that I will not bump into the box in his pocket and ruin his plans!

We have been in a long distance relationship for almost 9 years now and will be getting married this May. We are both looking forward to living in the same city, seeing each other everyday, and doing things that normal couple do on a daily basis. Can’t wait to marry him!
