Lisa and Marc
How We Met
It was a typical Saturday night out on the town in Stevens Point, WI. I was out with the guys and Lisa was out with her girls. Naturally, our group of friends gravitated towards one another and we began to match dancing partners. My good friend started to dance with Lisa as I watched and danced with her friend. From a far, I jealously watched Lisa as she danced with my friend. Although I was dancing with her friend, I couldn’t help but notice her beautiful features and confidence. At the end of the night, we exchanged names and as most millennials do – I searched for her on (stalked her) social media to find thousands of “Lisa Nguyen.” Once I found her, I flipped through several photo albums to get a better sense of what she was like, how she presented herself and hopeful that I wouldn’t find a boyfriend of any kind. Once the following checked out, I made my move. Without hesitation, I “slid in her DM’s” as it’s often referred to these days. We started to communicate but only small talk. That small talk turned into hours of conversation and soon turned into a our first date. That was 5 years ago!
How He Asked
Typically Marc and I spend our Saturdays together if I’m not working. Saturday February 25th, 2017, he wanted to take me out to celebrate a successful dance season as captain of the UW- Stevens Point dance team. Prior to that, he arranged to get my nails and hair done and made reservations for us to go out to dinner. It was a day I wish I could relive! I didn’t work and didn’t have much planned besides going to see him master his presentation for prospective student-athletes at UW- Stevens Point. During his speech, he didn’t seem nervous at all, so I didn’t think anything of it, especially because I knew all we had planned for that day, was date night. Once the presentation was over, we headed home and got ready for dinner, it was pretty early, so I was curious but didn’t question it. We head out for reservations around 3:50 pm, pretty early for dinner right? As Marc is rushing me out the door, he gets a phone call from one of his faculty members and they wanted him to meet with a student, which is nothing out of the norm.
Sure enough, we make a pit stop at the Noel Fine Arts Center on campus (where we want our ceremony) and I told him I was going to wait in the car. I get a phone call from my friend Signe, “Hey, Marc’s in here talking to the dance faculty and prospective student, you should come in to check out my project!” My first thought, “why now?” I gave in and started walking towards the doors and I see my future maid of honor standing there with flowers. I’m so confused, next thing I know, I turned and all our friends and family were lining the hallway and “Marry You” by Bruno Mars comes on.
My dance team starts a flash mob as I walk down the hall with everyone smiling at me. Honestly, I couldn’t recognize anyone because I was bawling. Eventually the music starts to fade, I turn around and Marc say’s, “Well, in front of our friends and family. I brought you here to ask you one simple question. Beyond all the theatrics, all the planning, all the headaches, and heartaches, all the ups and downs, I know that I want to spend the rest of my life with you and I would hope that you would do the same.
So Lisa Nicole, will you marry me? In that moment, I was so excited to spend the rest of my life with my best friend!
