Lisa and Mike
How We Met
Mike and I went to the same middle school and high school, but never officially met because we somehow didn’t cross paths. Fast forward to after college, when my cousin, Becca started dating Matt. Not only was he Mike’s college roommate/close friend, but I actually grew up with him (small world!).
In late September, Matt invited Becca and I to attend Mike’s birthday celebration at Xfinity Live! in Philly. It was Oktoberfest and we love beer, so it only felt natural to attend! We went with a big group of people and did not pace ourselves like we should have, so I found myself purchasing a soft pretzel only 2 hours in. Mike was standing there when I bought it and I asked if he wanted to share – he took me up on it! We started talking, and I thought he was so cute and sweet. A few hours later, Mike and I were kissing in front of the band! Yes, photos were taken and one of our friends still has it saved. After that eventful night, we went on a few dates together, and he asked me to be his girlfriend on October 23, 2013.
The last 5 years with Mike have been amazing. We’ve shared countless date nights, holidays and vacations, two apartments and yes, more soft pretzels! Things haven’t always been easy, but no matter what life has thrown at us, we’ve always gotten through it together. I’m so blessed to have him in my life and he’s my best friend. I love him so much!
PS – Just in case you’re wondering… Becca and Matt got engaged last spring! Both of us are in their wedding and we cannot wait to be a part of their special day. We are over-the-moon excited for them and couldn’t be more thankful that they finally introduced us!
How He Asked
Mike and I went on a vacation with my family to Nashville to celebrate my brother Kevin’s 21st birthday. It was our first time so we were super excited! A few friends asked me if I thought he would propose before I left. For some reason, I thought he’d be asking me in the fall, so I wasn’t expecting it. I thought it would be just another family vacation!
We arrived on the Fourth of July and we were ready to party! When we walked to the downtown area, we had to go through a security check-point. I walked through with a few of my family members and after walking a few steps, I turned around to see that Mike and my brother were still in line. I thought it was odd, but I still didn’t suspect anything.
Once we got through security, we got drinks at a vendor and my dad suggested we walk up to the pedestrian bridge. It was a beautiful day and when we got to the top, I immediately asked Mike for a picture. He got nervous and asked if we could wait to take one with the family first. I was being my usual, impatient self and insisted we take one anyway. And then, it happened! He turned to me, told me he loved me and got down on one knee to pop the question! My smile was huge but I was so speechless that Mike had to ask “is that a yes?” Of course, it was! My parents, brothers (Tom, Jon, and Kevin), Tom’s girlfriend (Laura), Jon’s girlfriend (Sarah) and Kevin’s best friend (Pat) were all there to capture the moment (and shed some tears). And needless to say, Mike was VERY relieved when I said yes. The moment was perfect.
I felt like I was on a cloud all night and I wasn’t even hungry at dinner (I am ALWAYS hungry!). While this was happening, Mike and I were making phone calls and face-timing all of our loved ones who weren’t there and they were so incredibly happy for us. We went bar-hopping after that and the night ended with an incredible fireworks show (and street hot dogs). It was an amazing night!
The ring is exactly what I wanted… a beautiful solitaire that fit my finger so perfectly. I sent ideas to my mom to share with Mike a few months before, but he really went above and beyond. He went to a family jeweler and got me the most beautiful diamond I’ve ever seen. I STILL can’t stop looking at my ring. Every time I look at it, I smile and think of Mike.
Mike and I decided to have a long engagement so we could have plenty of time to plan, save and enjoy the ride! We’re getting married on May 30, 2020 – my maternal grandparents’ wedding anniversary. When we told my Nanny, she cried tears of joy. I know my Poppy is up in heaven, so happy and excited for us. We are counting down the days and cannot wait to make it official!
