How We Met

Andy and I met during college at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. The first time I noticed him was during my Sophomore year while I was at the gym. I was working out and caught the eye of some guy across the room that I recognized, but I had no idea where I had seen him before. We acknowledged each other from across the room, then went our separate ways. But, it really bothered me that I couldn’t remember who he was so I kept glancing over at him to try and jog my memory. Of course, every time I looked over at him we made awkward eye contact…so after he had caught me looking at him 3 or 4 times, I decided to cut my workout short and head home out before I embarrassed myself more.

The next morning, I was standing with my friend outside of our Intro to Geology lab, and I was telling her all about the guy I had seen in the gym the night before. Just as I was explaining to her how familiar he looked, but how I had no clue who he was, he walked around the corner! I nearly bit my tongue, hoping he hadn’t just heard what I was saying. So, it turned out that the guy I saw in the gym was the teaching assistant for my Intro to Geology lab. I was glad I had solved the mystery, but when I sat down in the lab that I realized that I didn’t even know his name…(0-2, Lisa). I actually paid attention in the lab that day and eventually, the professor mentioned the T.A’s name, Andy. After that day we started chatting after class, which eventually turned into endless conversations and hours of laughter. In true cliché fashion, the rest was history.

How He Asked

Three and a half years later, Andy and I left for our first big trip together to Olympic National Park in Washington. On the fourth day of our trip, we visited Rialto beach to look at the tide pools. After hiking along the beach for a while, we found a nice secluded part of the beach to sit and watch the waves crash onto the rocks. We talked for a bit and then Andy got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! After a stunned silence, with tears welling up in my eyes, I asked, “are you serious?!”. Andy laughed and reassured me that he was indeed serious, and then I remember the proper response which was a resounding, YES! The ring is Andy’s Grandmother’s. He had all of the diamonds and even the metal reworked into a handmade, one-of-a-kind ring.

Our trip to Olympic National Park was stunning all on its own, but now we have a little piece of Rialto beach that will remain in our hearts forever.
