Lindsey and Shane
How We Met
We met in college through mutual friends while attending the University of Missouri. Our flame kindled in late 2012 when Shane asked me to go to a Mizzou basketball game with him.. that’s when his interest first sparked mine. We would make plans to hangout but then college demands kept us from seeing each other. The texting increased and conversations deepened just as I was about to leave for a month long study abroad trip to Thailand. We communicated through texts, emails, and pictures while I was away. I remember how excited I felt when I had wifi so I could check my messages in case I received something from him. As soon as I returned he came over to my apartment and it felt like being with an old friend, although it was our first time hanging out alone. We had an instant connection and hung out constantly after that. About a month later on the brisk evening of February 24, he asked me to be his girlfriend when we were standing atop a rock hill overlooking the snowy sunset. Exactly 2 years and 2 months from that date I became his fiancé on the beach in Miami, and now here we are about to get married!
How He Asked
We were on vacation in Miami with plans for a beach photo session before boarding our first cruise ship together. Shane was hurrying me to get ready which I thought was odd because we weren’t running behind as far as I knew. Anyway, we took the elevator down to head towards the beach. When we reached the boardwalk outside the hotel, Shane pulled my sleep mask out of his pocket and used it to blindfold me.. My stomach filled with butterflies!! He led me to the beach and we walked hand in hand through the sand while he guided me along.
At some point he stopped and when he removed the blindfold we were staring into the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. The view was beautiful and we were the only two people on the beach at that time. Then, I looked down and saw the aisle of rose petals leading towards the water.
I felt Shane grab my hand and he walked me down that aisle, ending in front of a big heart of red rose petals. He grabbed my other hand and turned me towards him. Staring straight into my eyes, he started telling me how amazing life has been together.. Before I knew it, he was down on one knee and presented me with a little blue box topped with a white bow. He asked if I would do him the honor of untying the ribbon.. out came a tiny black box that he opened to reveal the most perfect diamond ever. He asked if I would make him the luckiest man in the world by becoming his wife. Of course I said “yes!” and he slid the ring on my finger.
We had our first engaged kiss and that is when I noticed the photographer was already there and had captured our special moment! Shane then pointed and said, “I have another surprise… look over there!” and out came my mom and brother who must have been hiding somewhere.
They flew down from Illinois to celebrate our memorable occasion with us and planned the whole thing without me knowing! The tears of happiness were hard to keep back- it was the best day of my life so far!
