Lindsay and Scotland
How We Met: 5 years, 8 months and 40 days ago I was carrying a box and unpacking my car at university when I bumped into a guy with the most amazing eyes I had ever seen. I was instantly lost in them and barely heard him make a joke about how we were both wearing plaid – the ‘moving day uniform’.
I followed him up the stairs carrying my box and we soon realized our rooms were just down the hall from each other. We hung out all night with the rest of the people from our floor and I can honestly say no one has ever made me laugh as hard as Scott did. As I went to bed, I told my best friend “I am going to marry that guy one day”.
How He Asked: On the morning of May 23rd, I woke up to breakfast, the most beautiful flowers & a note telling me to get ready for a day full of surprises. My brother picked me up and we drove to Mystic Beach together – a magical secluded beach on Vancouver Island where Scott and I share many memories. When my brother and I got down to the beach, Scott’s sister and one of his best friends were waiting for us. After a quick hug, the three of them headed back up the trailhead and I walked around the corner where I saw him, standing beside a breath-taking and dream-worthy picnic. As I walked down the beach towards Scotland, my heart was racing and I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. We locked eyes and it was like I had tunnel vision, the rest of the world melted away. I walked the first 100 meters towards him and then started to run. I finally reached him, gave him the biggest hug and kiss, and started to shake. He began reciting what I know were the sweetest words (of which I remember so little – thankfully he was wearing a mic) and then he got down on one knee and said the 3 words I knew I wanted to hear since the day I met him 5 years, 8 months and 20 days ago. He opened a box to reveal the most beautiful and brilliant ring I have ever seen.
Somehow between my tears I managed to say YES and thankfully he had a photographer there to capture it all, because the rest is a blur.
After a mini impromptu engagement photo session, we drank bubbly, watched the waves crash and ate a picnic that Scott had prepared. Each dish represented a milestone or memory in our life – risotto from when we lived in Italy, Apple Streudel from our first vacation together to Tofino and quiche from the first fashion show I planned. The sun beamed down on us and my heart was shining knowing that I could now call him my fiancé.
